Freezemarking - how do horses react to it?

They normally use a bit of sedative gel in my experience. Mine hardly noticed it being done and no bad effects at all. And their marks are clear and distinct. I wouldnt think twice before going ahead. Much better than an empty field...

Hi there,
I've just had my lad micro marked, its a small horse shoe which is marked on the shoulder, it just shows that the horse is micro-chipped
He is a very sensitive horse and being grey it had to be held on for longer to kill the hair follicles, i just couldn't put him through having the full freeze mark.
He was fine he just stood there, looked a little worried, but was absolutely fine. I think it hurt me more than him LOL
Had my old lad done years ago, he had full freeze mark on his back, he hated it, he dipped his back right down and wasn't happy at all, wished i'd had it on his shoulder, but he was fine and it was very quickly over and done with, again it probably hurt me more than him.
What ever you decide to do farm key are brilliant, they take their time and are very experienced, it far better for them to go through a little discomfort than to have them stolen and not know what's happened to them. :-)

^ Very fine skinned mare. Farmkey were fab and adjusted (shortened) the time that the markers were held on her to suit that fact. The Farmkey lady was also very calm and as I had some polos in my pocket, she (the mare) didn't really take any notice of the marking process at all. She just wanted a polo.... and another polo etc... No sedation needed. :)

My horse ran round the stable with me and Freezemark lady in tow  She said he should have had 666 as his freezemark! Luckily it turned out ok.
None of the other horses done bothered at all.

do farmkey go all over the country? im in yorks & considering having my new one done seeing as he looks like a gypsy pony

Call them, and Freezemark, they come to most areas every few weeks, if you are on a yard, they will do a "job lot" for a bit of a discount, I believe Freezemark are Midlands based :)

i would sedate. i dont think its painful but it would be a funny sensation, but for mine, its the sounds and 'freeze smoke' that makes them nervous. we sedate ll ours. sedalin often enough but you can try that new stronger stuff, dormasaedin gel

I didn't have a good experience having only one of ours done. He flipped out, I remember it very well even though I was only about 9 at the time. But then again that was a few years ago so Im sure they'll have improved it now? Because my pony went nuts she couldnt hold them on long enough so to this day I still cant read it. Would never do it again. Prefer to microchip.

my horse - who needs full sedation for clipping- just stood there and took it - i have no idea why - but if anyone's going to react to something it's her - odd horse!

my incredibly sensitive horse stood like a rock and just moved slightly when it came to the large L for the LOU mark. The freezemarker was very professional and calm IMO.

Puzzle didnt even notice it was happening. She got slightly fidgetty on letter 4 but only cos we were making her stand still!

My very laid back lad reared up and threw himself about - the freezemark lady held on tight (her feet left the ground more than once, but she didn't budge) and the mark was perfect.

Still, I'll be having the other 2 done when they are old enough

Thanks everyone, wow lots of replies! The old boy is marked, and the spotty is chipped, I've been waiting for the youngster to be old enough to have it done, will book him in soonest, he's a little nervous of strangers but accepting of new things with gentle handling.

For the European members on here does anyone know of a company who does Freeze marking in The Netherlands, Belgium, France or Germany.
I desperately want my 3 done to give me peace of mind but can't find anyone here to do it.
Have even mailed Farmkey to see of they could help but they just ignored my e-mails:mad:

Mrs M should be able to answer you better as she recently had ALL hers done!

Lol - still have the poorly bank account to prove it  (had all personalised ones :rolleyes::D).

Little Cob - didn't turn a hair

Little Lad - wasn't impressed, but just showed his annoyance by walking around, a lot :). Lady was very good and calm and just went with him :D

Dizzy - was fine for the marking, but had to be sedated for the clipping.... and yes, I know it's only a small area, but still, she is the Dizzy one . I had the vet on hand just in case she kicked off, but all was fine :D

Grey Mare is on loan, but I am considering asking her owner if I can get her done - make me feel more comfortable about her :)

We had Farmkey. Lovely lady. Very good in the office as well. Strongly recommend :D

ETS: they are all microchipped as well :)
