Looking to Freezemark my two horses, their both in full time work, so branding under thier saddle would interupt their schedule, one of them is a dapple grey irish draught, whom i'm hoping to show, is it frowned upon for show horses to be branded on their buttocks? any info appreciated

They don't tend to do bums - it's either saddle area, shoulder or sometimes necks. Judges are not supposed to take freezemarks into consideration - some might, but that's their problem. Freezemarking is becoming really popular now, so i doubt any judges would bother marking the horses down for being marked. There were several at HoYS and Olympia and they've done well!

Why don't you go for the shoulder, they don't have to have so much time off then? I've never heard of freeze marking the bum

freeze marking for greys has to be done on thier shoulders anyway.

If you have the dark coloured horse done on his back, it is only 5 days off, it wont affect fitness
On the shoulder in the showring for dark coloured horses can affect them as it brakes up the appearance of the shoulder. So its up to you realy, if yuour serious about the showing then your going to have to give him the time off. Freeze marked horses have done well at HOYS etc but they are all done under the saddle.

I have decided to have my mare done too. Coincidentally, I emailed Farmkey about marking on the bum. They said that they have done it, and it depends upon the behaviour of the horse - so it can be done. I'm trying to decide between that and the shoulder.

I had that confirmed today for my horse that if he's light coloured, it HAS to be the shoulder, didn't know that before...did want under the saddle but it's fine as my other 2 were done on the shoulder!

Is that a new practice to do it on the shoulder? My grey mare is done under the saddle, it was done before we bought her though which was about 12 years ago

Greys are marked on the shoulder, my mare has been done, it really isn't that much time off. They don't loose fitness.

As for show horses being marked I have never of it being the reason a horse was put down the line.

Stella they have to be given time off anyway whether its on the shoulder, the bum or under the saddle, on the shoulder i think they advise 3 days off, the saddle patch is a week i think. Never seen a horse done on the bum but would presume time off would have to be given similar to on the shoulder.

I have a coloured cob. They are freezemarked usually on the shoulder and the stamp is left on for longer to kill the hair completely. They prefer to do it on a dark area so they did my pony,s mark behind the saddle area. Heres a photo;

This is a week or so after it was done.
The farmkey website is pretty good for info,

[/ QUOTE ] I'd read that greys shouldn't be done on their back because its a bald mark - so the saddle etc may rub!

Makes sense! No idea why she was done on her back....she never seemed to have a problem from it though

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, I know. I think it was Murhysbar who had concerns about time off. The decision about where for me is about wanting it to be seen, but look as nice as possible. Don't think there would be much in it between shoulder and bum, so I'll probably go for the shoulder.
