Does anyone have a grey that is freezemarked, as i was reading on the farmkey website that greys require a bald mark that has to be placed on the shoulder? I thought even greys could have it done on the saddle are.

My grey is freezemarked, he was done on his shoulder as the company that did him (Farmkey) said that, as the freezemark ends up being bald rather than white, that they end up being rubbed if they are under saddle. Hope that helps, heres a pick, it doesn't look too bad especially as it spells his name!

dnt forget with freezemarking you have to keep paying for hte mark otherwose they will freezemark another horse with the same brand.
Why not just microchip?? Less pain ive always found!

Dianchi, no they dont, the mark is unique to your horse untill you notify them that the horse has been PTS.
Ive checked this because i bought a feeze marked pony whos owners hadnt kept up with the yearly payments, i then transfered ownership and havent paid in the 12 years since, i checked at the weekend if we could become members again and they said the number is unique!

Microchipping is a waste of time IMO, because untill horse markets actualy buy scanners and start checking for them then they do nothing to stop the horse being sold on if its stolen and they are not a visual deterant! Microchips are also difficult to detect because there are different types of chip and certain chip readers will only pick up certain types. Chips also have the lovely tendancy to move! Inserting the chip in a sensitive horse can cause an abcess or a huge lump of scar tissue to grow round it.

conniegirl is quite correct Dianchi. Once a Freezemark is used it cannot be used again. I had a grey who had to be freezemarked on the shoulder, as said above, because it is a bald mark, that is, it destroys the hair cell so there is no hair there, thus offereing no protection. By not keeping your subscription up-to-date, it means that if the horse gets stolen, it vcannot be traced back to it's owner. Freezemarks and microchips both need to be kept registered and both can be re-registered with the proof that you own said horse.
personally, I wouldn't bother with microchips, Freezemarks all the way, it is such a clear deterent, and it should not affect you when showing.

I've been assured that they will not use the freezemark again unless when your horse dies you want it used on another horse. The microchip is only useful if people have a scanner.

I'm involved in horsewatch & dont have a scanner so wont be able to check if any horses are stolen by this method, however, the freezemark is so much easier for anyone to check the details & find out if the horse is stolen.

Donkeymad Farmkey allow you to join after your horse has been stolen if your horse is already marked (for an aditional fee of course).

It won't affect showing etc... having your horse marked on its shoulder.

There is another option though Farmkey bald marked my friends grey behind the saddle flap, so mark is visible if her horse has a numnah under his saddle, but hidden if he has a square saddle cloth on.

My grey mare was done on her saddle area. It isnt that visible though and needs clipping regularly to be seen. It didnt cause any problems for ridden work etc...
