Freezemarking, yay or nay?

I don't deny it's a deterrent but the turth is stealing the type of horses I have from the type of location I live in is rarer than plane crashes apart from in ownership disputes where a freeze mark would not help anyway . if I where OP I would freeze mark under the saddle because of the experiance she has had , there's no doult in my mind colored horses seem to stolen most.

I completley understand where your coming from. Depends on the type of Horse as not all will appeal. My Horse is one of 7 at my yard, she is the only coloured, although she is not a cob (I do suspect she has welsh D in her though somewhere) 3 are ISH/WB types and the other 3 are youngsters. A welsh C gelding, A stunning Palomino Welsh D Filly and a Welsh D x Hackney liver chestnut filly.

I am concerned about the 2 fillies and my own Horse as these would appeal most. The owner of the fillies doesn't want hers freezemarked though, so will just be mine.

I have my fell mare freezemarked on her shoulder, done by Freezemark Ltd so it's just three digits. It can be seen from a distance as it is glaringly obvious and I know it can be distracting as it draws the eye. I cover it over with black show makeup when competing and wash it off afterwards. Best of both worlds.

TBH I really hate the look of it. I used to own a little PBA and in my opinion it spoiled the look of him for showing with his freeze mark on his shoulder which was done before I got him. Perhaps under the saddle area but even then I'm not a fan.

When our mares were assumedly taken (field wire was cut not broken) they were dumped we guess because they were freezemarked and after taking off rugs the thieves realised this! It also helped trace them as the police refused to send out someone to scan telling our good Samaritan that took them in it was his problem and he would have to pay for a vet. One phonecall to freezemark and reunited.

I really believe in Freezemarking and have every horse and pony I have ever owned done. I had two stolen a few years ago, and they were dumped close by. We believe because once they got some light, the thieves saw the freezemarks.
It is a visible deterrent, no scanners etc needed for anybody except blind people to see.

Agree with this, makes a fantastic visual deterrent; which IMO outrides EVERY other consideration.

My old boy was done before I had him; he was bright bay and it was right on his shoulder, a bit in-your-face, and when I had him first I just hated it, but got used to seeing it on him and I was happy for it to be there in case he got pinched.

I've had the horse I've got now done; he's a piebald so it was a bit tricky finding a black bit to do it on, but we settled on his bum!!! - and used an abbreviation of his name as a special mark.

I'm sure that anyone who's had their horse stolen, without being freezemarked, would heartily wish they had got it done.

I can't understand why anybody would not freezemark because they think it doesn't look nice! I'd rather have my horse, than loose him because I didnt want his pretty look ruining.
