My OH and I are finally getting around to getting a puppy. We have narrowed it down to Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs. We want to start tracking down good breeders etc, anyone suggest anyone. They both seem to be quite rare here in the UK. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also any advice or views on these breeds would be welcomed too!!

I have a three-year-old Boston Terrier but live in the US. It baffles me that they aren't more popular in England -- really, I've never met another breed, Labs aside, that are so good with kids, other dogs and even cats.

Anyway, enough of the breed promo

Do not go through sites like epupz etc. They are a haven for BYB and puppymillers and promote irresponsible breeding.

Bostons do have their share of health issues, so going to a good breeder is essential. The parents should have had an OFA patella exam and a BAER hearing exam. These are the main issues that afflict Bostons and faulty patellas are a fortune to fix, so it's worth paying that little bit extra for a pup up front.

Good BT breeders are Wildax (Liverpool), Wenfryn (West Wales) and Sansarc (Northampton, I think). If they don't have pups available, ask for a recommendation.

Here's a picture of my girl, Stella. She's out of Ch. El-Bo's Rudy is a Dandy, one of the most celebrated BTs of all time and is a picture of health. She is my jogging companion, my snugglebug and my tug of war/fetch supremo. Really, once you'd had a BT, expect to acquire a second soon after
