French Link for riding club?

At a Riding club area competition this weekend we were told in no uncertain terms that French Link bits were no longer allowed and all bits with a central piece had to have a lozenge.
Looking on the BRC website at the rule book for this year in the appendix 7 it clearly shows a normal French link in the diagrams.
In the text part it says that any central link must be rounded.
I assume they mean that a French link proper is fine, a Dr Bristol is not, but try telling that to a steward with a clipboard.
If French links are no longer to be used (and I can't imagine this is the intent,) it could prove tricky for probably at least half the competitors.
