Ok, so bare with me folks. This is probably a very novicey question, but what's really the difference/ pros and cons for a lozenge and a French link?

I ask as when I tried my mare she was in what looked to be a NS starter, got her home and popped in a friends simple French link as I only had NS verbindends, neither of which were the correct size. She's been schooling beautifully so I ordered a loose ring snaffle with a copper lozenge, thinking it would be more similar to the NS then the French link. Finally tried it on her tonight and she was awful, like a different horse, head in the air, nose poking and head tossing and an absolute disregard for the bit. The only difference is the lozenge, which I had thought would be 1) more similar and 2) lay better across her tongue and be more comfortable.

I'm going to try her back in the normal French link tomorrow, if no better then I will obviously have back checked, saddle checked and teeth etc. But her reaction screams that it's the bit and it's gotten me thinking! Which is milder? Which do you prefer?

The lozenge is milder and the pressure is more evenly distributed - whereas the french link is better than say a snaffle the French link works by tongue pressure via the plate in the middle. My boy is ridden in a sweet iron copper lozenge and he goes great in it - and hes had both a snaffle and a french link and while he goes fine in the french link I really noticed a difference in the lozenge. My friends horse cant be ridden in anything other than a straight bar - suppose its just down to horses preference
