Husband has just been out in one of the barns and has shot some pigeons (used a little .410, so only one shot in them).

We usually throw the pigeons away, but I was thinking; does anyone who feeds raw, give their dogs pigeons? Whole and complete with feathers on? If this is okay to feed like this, then I will have a new constant supply - for free!

Pluck them and freeze for a couple of weeks, this will
kill any parasites then feed

Oh, I forgot about the parasites

. I'm not sure I can be bothered to pluck for such a small return; I'm lazy

Ah well, was worth asking anyway, and thank you for answering.

Skin them, thats what I do, make an incision then just pull it off feathers and all it's usually quite easy to pull it off leaving the meat and bones, I'd chop the wings off, they arent worth bothering about on a small bird.

I don't hold with all that freezing theory I feed raw, dogs fed overly cooked food still get parasites and healthy raw fed dogs are not at risk from salmonella, their whole digestive system has evolved to deal with these bugs as dogs are carrion eaters. Besides freezing does not kill bugs like salmonella.

You will need to wash your hands thoroughly though!!!!

Ooh thanks for the help

Will they be okay to leave till tomorrow? Am just in the middle of making Sunday lunch, for people; don't fancy going out to the barn to de-skin the pigeons just yet. There were only 2 pigeons today and I have 4 dogs, so it will give me time to defrost some tail and tongue for the other 2 who don't get the pigeons.

PS. My dogs are all well used to eating dead animals raw; they find lots of carcasses and "bits" of animals on the farm, so I'm not concerned about any ill-effects, just hadn't really considered the parasitic angle before.

My dogs eat all sorts (they find them in the fields) rabbits and birds that have been dead for god knows how long. If you husband is shooting the pigeons, why not eat the best bits yourself? They are really nice and give the rest to the dogs.
I buy whole free range chickens for us and boil the rest to get the scraps for the dogs, we do this with partrige and pheasant so why not do it with wood pigeon.
p.s they are too goo to waste on a dog!!

Can't you take the breasts off and put them in a game pie and feed the left overs to the dogs?

Mmmmmmmmmm....best idea! lol

One of our springers regularly catches pigeons and eats the lot. Never done him any harm! He's even eaten rotten one's that he's unearthed, that dog has a very strong constitution though!

Mine like their food a bit gamy, smelly and slimy!

That's what they evolved to eat when they could not make a kill, or store food in times of plenty, a herbivore lives off body fat in times of famine but a carnivore cannot go long without a meal, even a skanky one!! That's why they bury bones and dig them up later it harps back to their instincts!

I often buy chicken, take off the crown for me and then chop the back legs and arms off and use if for the boys.

I think it's great when dogs eat things that are natural like a whole rabbit fur the lot, or old bones and even feathers. I see so many people screaming at the poor dog to leave it alone, sticking their fingers down the poor little buggers throat to retrieve it's lovely prize, then they take the poor dog home and feed it a bowl full of dry overcooked meat flavoured wheat!

Well in the end, what I did was just give the dogs the pigeons whole and intact and they took them off and ate them. I think they enjoyed them.

Our Rotti swallows anything she finds... usually whole

My OH saw her with a rotten squirrel one day, tried to get it from her so she just swallowed it whole head first, by the time he got to her the tail was just going down her throat!!

He did wonder if she expell it the same way it went down!!
