Have seen a 3/4 fresian mare (think the 1/4 is welsh) for loan and i'm going to see her on sunday. I have had a welsh D for 7 years and love the personality and trust-ability. How do fresians compare? I'm not a great rider, i'm ok at actually riding but its my nerves that get me and i need a good sturdy reliable horse to help me. The mare is advertised as really calm and reliable etc but if you are confident you won't really see potential problems for a wreck like me lol

Hmm similar but not totally the same, i'm not a novice and i have had TBs and welshies all my life so i think i would have a little more experience and ground manner experience than that poster. On the ground im very confident, i just get a little nervous in the saddle as i havent ridden in year or so. I have also trained both my minis from scratch to drive and i long lined my welsh. I plan to at least get this horse started as something we can do to establish both a bond and rules.

Is it actually a Fresian though? So many hairy black cobs these days being passed of as Fresian x and when you question the Fresian aspect of their family lo and behold no one can actually name the Fresian that introduced the genes they know so much about (sorry OP, not having a pop at your, just something I've noted over the past few years!).

I would say don't judge a horse by its breed, the two horses I have had the best time on over the years have been a Dutch Warmblood x TB and a New Forest Pony, totally different horses but both equally wonderful!

She has definitly fresian blood, you can immediately tell from the chest and neck but i can also see a good welsh D in her in the back and legs, i know shes not a purebred at all (advertised as 3/4) i don't really mind if she is fresian or more welsh just looking opinions on their temperaments really. I don't have any decent hacking so i will be school bound a lot.

So far i have learned they haven't got good stamina, which is okay, i don't either :p

I wouldn't go with any preconceived ideas - just go and try and see whether that particular horse personality is for you. I am hesitant about believing the lack of stamina claims as I know many friesians enjoy days of endurance riding - properly prepared fitness wise of course.
