The above is a statement issued by the trainer on the debate of those pictures of the pony being lunged.

Personaly i dont believe a word of it - and the weakness/lack of muscle of the pony's backend, and over its back totally contradict what she is saying......Also the size of its neck in relation to the rest of the poor things body shows how its been trained

Whether it be in rollkur or otherwise, the pony simply hasnt been trained over the back correctly.....

i don't believe it either. if you'd somehow done it up that tight by mistake (as seems to be suggested) then you'd loosen it immediately, not stand there looking at it, wouldn't you?

if you rummage around you'll find a reply comment by the photographer that states she had time to spot the warm up , be shocked, go back to her car get camera and go back and take the photo's.

There is NO way that the get up on the pony was accidental. In one of the pictures she is clearly in the process of putting the sidereins ON in that position. And also they are not normal sidereins, but sliding ones - even more leverage on the pony's head.
I was really shocked that it was Coby van Baalen - I have (had??) huge amounts of respect for her trainer Johann Hinnemann, and was very surprised that someone he trained could treat a pony like this.

watching the video posted in NL, at first glance the pony looks to be performing very nicely, but when I watched it for longer I felt he looked set in the neck. Not sure whether I was just looking to see that, but it is easy to imagine training like that will encourage a false fixed outline.

Idiot woman - does she really think we'll believe her?! and she said it was at the beginning of the session!?!?! Normal people start gently don't they until the horse is warmed up...?

Personally I am amazed the pony accepted this kind of treatment at all unless it is so submissive it has lost all of its spark. If I strapped my dressage horses down like this (both of which as working at medium) they would both have thrown their toys out of the pram & probably thrown themselves on the floor! From the little bit of French I understand, I am relieved to see that many other people across Europe are also disgusted by these methods!

The french comments basically mirror what we have said...poor muscles in his bum/back due to the wrong kind of work. And that she couldn't possibly have not noticed this from the start so her excuses are rubbish.

altho there is a fair point on the french forum - where are the pictures of him being lunged for the next 10-15 mins in this attitude? I suspect this was their warm-up procedure. (not condoning this I hasten to add(!), just observing that we are being allowed to think that she uses this in trot and canter too when most likely the reins have been lengthened...)

I agree , it would of taken considerable pressure to get the pony's head into this position , and she would of known straight away that the side reins were way too tight!
In one of the pics she is holding the lunge then she passes it to the student- therefore I doubt this only lasted a few seconds..... a few seconds too long in any case.
Poor pony, must be very good natured or just used to this treatment - my mare would of flipped out!

Precisely why I think he is most likely lunged like that quite regularly.

Trying to make sense of Van Baalen's explanation - she seems to be saying this was an error. Would just like to know who fastened the reins? I find it impossible to believe people working at this level can make a basic mistake in the adjustment of their tack.

Can't see any trickery in the sequence of photos - they stand beside the pony and then pony walks a circle. If there is an error in the adjustment of the reins then in my book that's a whole circle too far.

Hope this debate is followed through as I find these photos very disturbing - the presence of the young girl makes them more so.

Exactly - how can she make such a huge error as to do the sidereins up so tightly - she wouldve noticed when she was trying to stretch the reins to reach the ponies bit that they were too tight, so why then start lunging it???
