My friends has a 17hh wb for asle, he is jumping double clear 1.20's...easy going, relaxed horse, knows his job. She wants £8k.

She has advertised with nice pic in H&h...NOT A SINGLE CALL!

I do not think she is being unrealistic with price, it is a good price for a 7 year old with money on his card...so why has noone called?

Reason for sale is that she has gone to Uni and wants to sell horse to fund her degree...

Any tips? They have advertised in H&H twice now, and horsemart.

Thanks

£8K is a lot of anyone's money and there are an awful lot of horses out there atm.

Not saying he's not worth it - just that there are so many about.

Personally I wouldn't sell a horse just to pay for uni but that is me. Can she not just get a student loan. I did and thousands more like me have done the same.

He does sound nice and worth the money - but it's just going into winter and sales are always slow this time of year. Has she got decent pics of him on the advert? If I had £8k I'd be interested! *wishes hard to win lotto this weekend*

Her choice, she cant afford to keep him whilst at uni, as he is kept on the racing yard her dad is on at the moment for free and if she moved him to her they could not afford to pay for his livery...she is doing quite an intense course so lack of time, and does not want to get in too much debt!

I think it is a brave decision!

I don't think the OP was asking if you'd fund your degree in that manner.

Why the judgemental response?! Even if she got a student loan to fund the degree, she probably still wouldn't be able to afford to keep the horse....

Scrooge - I think it's a bad time of year for selling a showjumper (as opposed to a hunter). Plus the market is a bit flooded with people selling for uni. Has she tried horse deals/horsemart/horsequest?

She has tried horsemart. I actually said that he would make a nice hunter for lady or gent - but he has got no experience. I am worried that whilst £8k is actually what he is wortth they will end up taking a silly offer for him as they cant sell him.

Meanwhile she has started uni and he is dropping fitness (as he in only going on the horsewalker, hack twice and schooled once)

Vicious circle.

If they do take silly money I would seriously consider buying him then putting him straght out on loan to a competition home till I have time to do two of them.

I know what I'm trying to sell isnt the same by any sense of the word, but yes, the market is incredibly slow.

I had a week of lots of calls (locally, because that's where I advertised first) no-one viewed, but then when I advertised wider... nothing. Not even a call.

seems people just don't want genuine horses and ponies atm.

How judgemental are you? Are you living in a dream world??

I have the full student loan I am entitled to, and guess what, it doesn't even cover my housing. I have to have my parents help me out just to live at uni, no way could I afford a horse so I had to sell mine. Selling a horse for uni is a difficult but mature decision to make.

I thought this forum is all about freedom of expression well I am just expressing my views crikey ........
Yes I too had to make financial and emotional decisions whilst at uni and no it wasn't easy for me either with a student loan whilst bringing up a child which believe me costs more than a horse and is more time consuming lol ( my choice though I must add).
No I don't live in a dream world or I don't think so let me just pinch myself to make sure.
Scrooge I can fully understand your friend's situation now you have explained it.
In an ideal world it is nice if a horse could be loaned out for the duration of a degree or course if the owner was attached the the horse.
However in many cases horses just get sold on.
It is a mature decision to make so far as the financial and time committments to a horse go due to a university course.
But I still can't understand unless we are talking about children's ponies and horses and teenagers growing up why so many people have horses when they intend to go to university in the first place?
Perhaps that is my black and white perception on this issue. But for me personally I would not have taken on any of my horses if I could not afford the time and money to care for them for the duration of their life.
I have seen too many horses simply passed on that I vowed never add to that issue.
This is a general statement btw and is not aimed at Scrooge's friend. In this case her friend would lose an otherwise 'free' placement of the horse resulting in additional costs and the course is time consuming therefore would she really have the time and money for her horse and the answer is generally no. So yes a wise decision.
However sadly not all decisions made with regard to horses and university are 'wise'.

So according to you, nobody should have a horse if they ever intend to sell it?

Selling a horse is not an evil thing you know? Its not like people are getting rid of their lame 28yr olds because they just don't care!

When I sold my horse she went to a fabulous home with people that will keep her for life and really love her. Thats not adding to any issue, its not dumping horses. So long as people are responsible about finding new homes for their horses, then I don't think anyone has a right to condemn them and say they shouldn't have horses in the first place.

Is the ad still meant to be on the H&H website - because I can't find anything on there answering that description. But then the H&H classified search facility is notoriously cr*p

Is it breezy on the cloud you are on?!?!?!

The horse is a competition animal. As I said it is out jumping 1.20's and some. She simply does not have time to do the horse justice....

Not being rude, but for a start, judging from the pics in your avatar, a horse to you is a pet and you are a member of the 'fluffy poniy brigade' (not that there's anything wrong wit that!!!) . However to other people. when a horse cannot be used for the job you bought it for, it is wasted and therefore far better for both that you sell the horse to a good home. Also, with loaning competition horses there is more of a risk that it will not work out, or you will get a horse back when they mess up the way you h ave schooled him and he starts knocking fences.

That and she bought the horse at 15 - she could have failed her GCSE's or changed her mind about going to Uni. As it stands she decided to go 18 months ago, like hundreds of other individuals spent a glourious summer competing, and put him for sale in September.

I really cannot see the problem!

I'm glad you found a good home for your horse but not everyone is a conscientious about finding a 'good' home for their horse when going to university.
I suggest you have a good old trawl through the horse sale catalogues and see how many times you can count the phrase 'For sale as owner going to university' Owners don't vet prospective buyers at auctions now do they.
Btw Scrooge I wish your friend good luck with selling the horse and hope she finds it a nice home as it does sound a good price for its achievements and age etc. I would have to agree about the concerns over winter. With the rise in costs of hay and feed this year ( hay on my yard increased a pound since last September and feed increased by nearly £2 a bag as well) it could have a slight detrimental effect on horse prices this winter. Therefore that may be the reason for the lack of interest.
Good luck though x

I have spoken to many people recently about buying and selling and basically the market is as dead as a Dodo! Sounds like the rightish price to me.
Want to see a pic now

BTW, what is it with you guys jumping on one another with flippant comments, just because you don't agree with what has been written? Jeeeez it's getting SOOOOOOOOOOOO bitchy around here!

No probs no need to apologise x
Agree with what you say though.
The horse does sound nice, would be nice one day to afford something like that but I think I will most probably stick with my 'pet' horses lol.

I would say the horse is too expensive. If she hasn't had any calls it is too much money. A horse is only worth what people are willing to pay for them. How old is the horse and is it actually getting placed at 1.20? does it have all of it's foxhunter DCs? Does it have a BSJA record or di dit do it abroad. If it isn't doesn't it isn't worth £8k.

There also isn't really a season to be buying ShowJumpers so that isn't why it isn't selling.

If they do drop the price, it won't be a 'stupid' price but the 'right' price if it sells. I guess it all depends on how much they want to sell the horse.

DD he has full BSJA history, I dont think he is over priced! Gets placed, anyones ride, one of those horses that is good to go and would look after you.

What price do you think?

If he was mine I would have him up for 10k and take 6! He is 7.

He is either overpriced or the advert is badly written. You are describing a nice horse, maybe you should rewrite the advert for them?

As to price, I haven't looked for a bit but I know a nice 1.40 horse that was for sale at £6.5k

FF do you have the ad?

I have a good friend who is looking for something like Beau, ie quiet, good to do, genuine...and big!

She keeps asking if she can take him jumping and so im trying to help her find her own while i still have a horse!

She is a good rider but wants something sane and sensible with no quirks....budget 6.5k though...?
