Friends horse lame :( Bloody kids

Just been to check Bramble who i'm keeping an eye on for a friend til march and he's hopping lame

I haven't been down since boxing day cos had car probs so one of the other girls on the yard said she'd check him etc. He's a exmoor x welsh (i think) who lives out 24/7.
Got there and he can't put his off hind on floor. i managed to bring him in and tie him up. called the vet out who found that a peice of glass has punctured his sole and has prob been in there for a day or more

he's had it cleaned and given bute and anti- biotics and is going to come back to see him monday.
This could have been avoided if the girl who said she'd check him had bothered to bring him in and pick out his feet and change his rug like she'd agreed. would have traken all of 10 mins of her time

He had the same rug on that i'd put on him boxing day.
I've had to sort out a stable for him and some hay cos he has to be box rested.
Sooooo pissed off cos i have often sorted out her pony if she's running late. She won't reply to my texts or emails and def won't pick up the phone. i've not been rude, just asked why she didn't notice it.

vet said it'd been there at about 24 hours. the girl in question even told me he was fine on 29th by text, when she's obviously only looked into the field. the YO said she had not seen him in at all while the girl was there.
 
I agree you are being very harsh!
The piece of glass could have only just got in there and even if it hadn't, what did you ask this girl to do when she was checking. Did you just ask her just to check he was still standing?
Or do that and change rugs, pick out feet etc????
If I was the owner I'd be cross you asked someone else to do MY horse when he was meant to be in your care?
Unless of course you told the owner
 
I think you have to accept these things happen! Things are not always obvious at the time - i.e. it can take time for swewlling and lameness to occur. I would imagine that the other girl is as moritified as you obviously are.

I would just be glad that the vet thinks the horse will be fine.
 
my friend she landed me with the pony the day before she went travelling. she told me that any of the girls on the yard would be happy to check him if i couldn't.
I don't think i'm being harsh at all considering i'd asked her to change rungs and do feet and she's agreed!
I'm not the only person she has said she'd do something for and has not done it recently. found out when i was there today that she'd said she'd put a night haynet in to a horse and didn't do so the horse ended up muching his bedding all night. If she didn't wanna do it then she could have said no.
 
I didn't know she was! she's always been helpful when i've seen her there and she's known my friend years and used to loan the pony, so i thaught she was the ideal person.
 
I don't know why people are being so hard on LindyLu? Has no one else ever asked for a favour before

I'd be very annoyed if someone had said they'd do me a favour and hadn't. However, if you want something done properly then do it yourself, so i'd just forget about asking the kid from now on and do it yourself

thanks jackdaws. only asked cos my windscreen wipers on my car packed up and would have been dangerous. never gonna ask again, i'll def be doing it myself.
 
jeez, some people on this forum are way too quick to jump on people!

i too would be peeved if someone has agreed to bring in and check feet, rugs etc and had only been looking at him over the fence in the field.

if the girl in question had done everything she was asked she would be mortified and would be replying to texts/calls- not burying her head in the sand.
 
she must know what's happened or she'd have replied but no, i've left messages on facebook, email, textsetc now so i'm not going to leave anymore. i'm just going to carry on making sure poor old Bramble is comfy and happy. i can't do anything else.
no point having an argument with her about it now. what's done is done.
 
i think he's enjoying being in and having all the attention. going to go check/settle him for the night about 7ish i think then see how the foot is tomorrow.
 
I had the same trouble with mine!

Only it was my flipping sister!

Part of my livery is that my YO does my water, but my mum told my YO I'd be doing my horse over christmas (which I did) - but I didn't know how the water works (it's a complex connection of hoses, which were frozen anyway). It was just a rediculous mix of conditions really.

My sister came with me in the evening where I had to fill up my buckets using the buckets from another (empty) paddock and I said to her if the water was gone by morning, I'd need to bring up some water carriers.

So next morning she checks horse, comes home and says water is fine. I ask how hay is. She says she doesn't know.
Now thats odd. Hay is up the paddock next to water. If she knows whater is okay, why doesn't she know hay....

Get to the yard in the evening to find no hay and no water. I have to struggle with the complex hose system, which has fortunately defrosted, to water my horse. Then I have to give her hay.

Was spewing. If I'd done a drive by on her youngster she'd be wearing my guts for garters... she had no right to lie that my horse had water when it did not!!!
 
I know how you feel! i did the girls pony for her when she was away mid dec, she left a tiny bit of feed so i had to go get some more and i made sure that i text her when i got home to let her know all done and not to worry. How is poor Bramble (her ex loan pony) any less important than her nag?
 
I agree that people are being too harsh on the OP!

If the girl had agreed to do these things and did not, she is at fault. Of course she may have missed the injury even if she had done them, or the injury could have happened later, but she is still at fault for not doing what she promised to do. I would be annoyed with her as well.

Hope the pony makes a quick recovery!

Or indeed if you'd been to check him daily as you were supposed to be doing.

Accidents happen - and of course this could have happened minutes before you arrived. But bottom line is this pony seems to have been your responsibility not some kids from the yard.

Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery........

Worst bit is that I'd mucked Milo out the day before purely because I had nothing to do and his stable needed doing!

Sister sat outside having a cuppa and a smoke and let me do it (just to come in and niggle it was all wrong... grrr...) - but can't be bothered to get out of her car to check Dor has water even when I said it needed checking specifically so I knew if I needed to find some carriers!

Gah. I don't mind the hay so much, Dor is covered well enough to last a nuclear winter... but a pregnant mare needs clean water!

Have you talked to the girl at the yard ?

Perhaps something came up with her also ?
 
Not going to argue or say you are harsh but, is it not possible that the glass entered the hoof soon after she checked, and that she just replaced the same rug? It is possible.
 
as i'd put in an earlier post there was no way for me to get there. she one changed his rug cos the other one was still foled in tacked room where i'd left it.
He's doing better today tho and seems to be putting more weight on it.
I don't think i'm in the wrong here and neither does my friends mum who i spoke to last night.
