Well my friend lost the last pup last night. She had taken the first weak pups to the vets and the vet had given her a lecture about the pups, told her the bitch clearly wasnt looking after them and she had to take them off the bitch and give them up to a breeder. She scanned them and told my friend the pups were constipated. She had four dead pups in the morning. When the others started to fail, she took them to a different vet where they diagnosed pneumonia and put the weakest on oxygen. Despite antibiotics they were unable to save them.

Very, very sad.

Very sad, but perhaps for the best. Just goes to show that dog breeding isn't as easy as some think. Surprised your friend hadn't realised the pups weren't being looked after, as I expect the pups would have been crying a lot

In my experience if a litter is contented and doing well you very rarely hear them, apart from the lovely puppy "murmuring" which I can't really describle but I'm sure people who have had pups will know what I mean. Hope the bitch doesn't fret too much for her litter (seems unlikely in this instance) and is soon back to normal, and that your friend has her spayed before any more accidents happen.

Poor little bitch.

If I'm honest, it does perhaps sound like your friend didn't have a clue so perhaps it's for the best.

I hope the bitch goes on alright and doesn't fret too much although as she's so young, perhaps it won't be as bad as if she had had a litter before. Nature has a funny way of usually being right.

The thing was that the bitch was actually appearing to being a good mum but initially was very defensive. So although my friend did her best to make sure they all got the early milk it wasnt easy. I think the sad thing is if the original vet had diagnosed the pneumonia, rather than giving the lecture, maybe, just maybe, the stronger pups would have survived. Maybe not. Who knows?

And I agree that probably my friends inexperience with pups wouldnt have helped either. But I think she did the best she could in the circumstances. Although my personal feelings are it would have been better if the situation had never arisen in the first place.
