We have a 3 year old Friesian that we have started to back and I know that I am biaist But he is gorgeous!!!

The only problem we seem to have with him is the mites on his legs and in his feathers... he was on wood chip but was so dirty is now on straw but we are going to change his bed to perhaps newspaper type ....

We have tried hibiscrubbing him, using rosemary and (cant remember the name of it) cream (sorry am at work and brain is a bit dead!)

Anyone have any experience of what else we can try? he does chew his legs if we dont regularly clean his legs and we have been told to clip his feathers but I am very very reluctant to do this due to his breeding...

Can anyone help?

i also have a friesian and my mar suffered with what we though was mites in the summer i use bed-down bedding dont really no if this has helped in anyway its a mixture between chippings and straw!heres link
http://www.bed-down.co.uk/

also i tryed everything for the ichy ness in her legs vets told me to take feathers of and like you i didnt want o so didnt that was the last result, i spent lots of money on diffrent products and even tryed frontline spray from the vets and nothing helped in the end i came across some stuff thats produced in america but you can now buy it in england is great stuff http://www.tailgator.co.uk/ i used the micro tek spray and shampoo the mega tek cell rebuilder is fab aswel and so is the survivor detangler

also lots of friesian breeders say to not feed them alfalfa for some reason i took no notice of this and feed it to her when we started to work her for a bit more energy but this made her itching worse and this was another thing that i dint fall into about when she became really itchy it wasnt until on a diffrent forum that someone said that alfalfa can cause skin conditions which made me think so i took her off alfalfa and since then i have put her on honeychop she has stopped itching and hair has started to grow back she went bald under her belly aswel as the itchy legs, i thought it was due to fly bites and her being sensitive to them so maybe another thing to think about

Our vets inject them with 'something', sorry not sure what it is called but could find out Has worked on three horses I know, a TB, a cob and a fell with lots of feather (one put both legs through a pig wire fence and ripped them wide open because the itching was driving him mad). It can't be used after worming with Invermectin if that gives you a clue. I think it needs redone every 6 months.

Jo

i would be very wary of the injection it hasnt been properly tested or something like that and there is a high risk with it thats why i never did it becuse of the risks vet told me the risks but cant remember but hink its bad like death or near as ask vets more about it

Hi

Well we have changed his bed from straw to Equisorb and to be honest this has 100% seemed to do the trick.

We are also looking in to those websites you told us about...

Thank you.

Hello,

I have just read your thread about friesians.

I posted one which is on page 2 regarding horse breaking.

I was just wondering if crazy_caz or anyone else could help.

My mare is 3 years old. I brought her from Holland and she now needs brining on. She is lunged most days (considering the weather). We've lunged with or without tack.

She lets us sit on her (brought her trained for riding and driving) but, when we kick her on she just stands there and doesn't move at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

have you got somone there to give u a hand by leading her when you kick. maybe she just needs to be taken back a few steps?
does she understand voice commands? this is really helpful it took only a day to teach our horse when we backed him.
