Iam thinking of buying my 1st ever friesian and wondered what other people think of the breed? What are your experiences? Iam an experienced rider but have always had warmbloods before so what can I expect?

A sharp, very sensitive big moving horse. I have had my girl for a year now and I had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I got her. It took her a long time to settle and I really struggled with her at first. My girl was VERY bargy when I first got her. I know of a few people who have bought friesians and had to sell them on as they were very over horsed. Def not for a novice or faint hearted owner! On the other hand she is lovely natured, is always pleased to see me and can move like a star. I think she is worth it but she is def a high maintaince horse.

Thanks for the info. I have also heard that they are sensitive and sharp but also loyal and affectionate. Iam going to see a breeder at the weekend to get an idea of what they are like. I have always wanted one and hope I can find one that's suitable for me.

Good luck I hope it works out for you. I nearly fell off the first time I trotted my horse, I was not prepared for how bouncy it was. Let me know how you get on.

my girl was very bargy until she got broken sent her away to a guy i know that has friesians buys sells them etc and ever since she came back she has been a star
it did get to the point before she went that i was thinking of selling as felt very over horsed so glad i did not now as she a star
the trot sure does fling you right out the saddle and takes a long time to get used to it
which breeder are you going to?
have a look on the english friesian society web page they will give you lots of help and advice

Girl on our yard went from Riding School 1 lesson a week to buying a 4 yr old just broken Friesian mare.

She has had her about 18 months now and hasn't fallen off or had any nasty surprises from her.
Somebody had done join up with her, so she had a problem to start off with that she didn't respect your space, she always wanted to be in it. TBH, that wasn't down to the breed, just the way she'd been handled.

Friesians are great! They are incredibley bouncy in trot, but once you get over that you feel on top of the world, and they have a prescence about them, my girls not far from 17hh but so graceful.
I hope you find your dream horse - Good Luck!

I researched long and hard before buying my first friesian and a great sourse of info is the FHAGBI website. I think with every breed there are different extremes. I know someone said there not a novice ride but u can find them. My boy has had varying levels of riders on him and the biggest difficulty for most riders is the elevated trot (def takes a while to get used to it). Its like riding a trampoline. Plus they have strength that you do not want to argue with. Are you going for the traditional baroque friesian or the new modern sports horse type? I would also say that you get alot better quality of friesian for your money in Holland. Im not sure whether you have considered taking a trip out there? It depends how much you care about breeding but i personally wouldnt pay over the odds for a non FPS registered friesian, your just guaranteed a better quality of friesian. Good luck with your quest, i wouldnt swap Roemer for the world :-)

Thanks to all who have answered! I really like the Baroque type and have been talking to a dutch guy called Peter Berkers who buys and sells in holland. He has a lot of quality horses for sale. Do any of you know anything about him? I have been doing loads of research and I just cant wait to see them in the flesh!!

I contacted Peter Berkers too when i bought Roemer. In the end i decided against buying from him as i felt he was being a bit too pushy. Would you go out and see the horses before buying. I can recommend some dealers that people have had good experiences with in Holland if ur interested? Also some people in this country that ppl have not had such good experiences with.
