... can do more than clear showjumps.
We went up to Ely yesterday, me, Rosie and her Mum with Frodo and Poncz for a bit of XC training - a good time was had by all.
In the morning session Sam (PC trainer) was helping the less experienced horses and/or riders and Tina sorted out the big boys. The former included my baby boy, Frodo. He was so good I still can't quite believe it tbh. He started by being very scared of a little chicken coop type thing painted blue but having had a very good look at it he decided it wasn't going to eat him and jumped it. Eyes on stalks but he went on to cope with steps, ditches, water - you name it, he jumped it and when the group was standing around being told what to do next he just stood quietly, listening to every word Sam had to say (probably). Here's a brief vid of some of what he managed albeit after some very wobbly starts. Incidentally, the first wet stuff is in the new water which will be in the advanced course in September at Little Downham 2.

A break for lunch and Tina very kindly said we could pop Frodo in a stable as he was going potty when we took Poncz off the lorry - he has to learn but with all of us out in the middle of the xc course it wasn't a good idea to leave him on his own on the lorry. (He was complaining like mad when the other horses trooped by but had only done one poo when we got him out so that was good
)
The next session was with Tina. Poncz's turn - he's only once been xc training (before Rosie's crash) and as an out and out showjumper he thought a log was absolutely terrifying. He was a bit of a handful and wasn't keen on any of it at first but Tina had R push him so his brain went into overdrive - particularly with the steps - and he was a star in the end.
Tina was complimentary about how Rosie is riding, given that it's only a year and a bit since her accident (this cheered R up no end when we told her). She said that if Rosie wants to do the Int on Bertie at LD1 she feels that she would be fine and also said, knowing Rosie's determination to move on (she'd been chatting to her during the afternoon), if she feels ready to do an Advanced by the end of the season, LD2 would be good as it's designed to be a nice step-up course.
Anyway, back to my boy - he was just amazing. Sam said he's the best kind of horse as he's cautious to start with but learns fast. He may never be a top class eventer (lap of the Gods and all that) but I'm absolutely certain he's going to be the best fun ever. He's going to do the tiny course at the E Essex Hunt HT on Sunday - Rosie's Dad is going to go in front on Bertie - I can't wait me
