hi, my pony has laminitis with 9degrees rotation of pedal bone in both fore legs.
he has had it for about 2.5 weeks, vet did xrays yesterday, is on box rest on deep straw bed as we dont have shavings.
our farrier peter gledhill is coming next week to do some specific trimming/shoeing based on the xrays and that date cant be brought forward. shall i make some frog/hoof supports to put on his feet until then to stop further rotation? i definately dont want anymore rotation! how can the rotation be stopped?
i know you can buy them but i would like to have a go at making some, any ideas?

thanks x

If it was appropriate your vet should have applied some. If you do it wrong you could make the pony much worse. Phone your vet for advice on the matter as every case is different.

The frog supports are for comfort, they won't stop rotation as this is caused by the pressure of the internal inflammation in your horse's foot. I wouldn't attempt anything homemade as this could do more harm than good if they slip and put pressure on the sole. Even the "proper" frog supports slip as I found to my cost.

Also if you can get shavings they are better for the hoof, straw won't be as supportive.
Soak and rinse the hay. No hard feed.
I'd get the vet to apply frog supports so they can show you how.

A deep shavings bed will pack into the hoof so the frog will be supported. The farrier will put on frog supports but until then a shavings bed will do the trick. The best thing you can do is go out and buy some shavings, and leave the rest to the pros! Straw won't help!
