One of my horses seems to be acting quite strangly at the moment and I am unsure if he is just acting up trying it on or something else (although I am unsure what).

He is normally an absolute saint to lead everywhere, he follows me I bring in and turn out without a headcollar on as he is that well behaved. He has been handled by complete novices, he was led to the field by my 10yro cousin who has never been nearer anything bigger than a donkey, he walked on the end of a lead rope like a sedated donkey. Only one person has had trouble with him (he apparently turned rather bolshy when taken to the field) however people on the yard reassured me he isn't like that and they couldn't believe he would be anything other than well behaved, therefore putting it down to the way he was handled.

Over the past month he has occasionally acted up whilst been brought in (both times he was being led correctly in headcollar and lead rope) he suddenly would shy. The first time he spooked he got around 4ft away from me then stood still and carried on as normal.

The second time a week later he did the same again but then ran around the filed (not back to his friends). He stood in the corner of his field and looked very scared when I went near him, very tense and I did worry if he would kick me. I eventually calmed him down and led him home and he was good ad gold.

Howver on tuesday he was led from the field without a headcollar and was foot perfect, he was then worked and was fine (his attitude to work and in general apart from these 3 little hiccups has not changed).

I then took him back to the field again loose and he walked on a little quicker than me as I was walking rather slow. He went to stand a few feet away from the gate I went up to him and he lept up into the air, forwards and kicked out. He was cms off my chest, so I was extremly lucky (especially as I went away on holiday the same day).

I have NO idea why he acted in such a manner, I never imagined he would kick out (a lot of people who have known him are shocked by this despite me only owning him since March).
Because of this and the fact he is still perfect to handle on the yard, leading anywhere else, when ridden and being worked from the ground has made me wonder if he is worried or scared over something rather than being naughty?

He has recently had an eye infection, the vet confirmed that there is nothing wrong with his eyes.

Any ideas, suggestions and/or advise is greatly appriciated.

I'd question his sight again by the sounds. Maybe he's not seeing certain light, sudden shadows can cause extreme reactions. Or maybe reduce periferal vision. Doesn't sound like alot wrong but its a thought. home he calms down

Has anyone else been handling him when your not there that could have been quite rough with him. Or has anyone been going into the field ie children and running them round or hitting them? Is it a possibility?

I will have his sight checked out again. But the time when he kicked out I was stood next to him and had patted him before before he lept and kicked he didn't do it as I walked up to him he just seemed to get rather tense.

flowerlady, no not that I know of but it had crossed my mind that perhaps someone had been going into the field and done something for him to act like this.

Did you say that others had been turning him out? Could it be that he has had a bad experience/rough handling which has bothered him?

Edited to say; sorry just read the last two posts properly! But still sounds like genuine nervousness than naughtiness?

No this was quite a while ago whilst he was kept at uni that others had handled him, my cousin did turn him out one day recently but I was with her (stood between her and him, she just had hold of the rope).

He was brought in today, this was the first time he has been led since tues (due me being on holiday) and he was good as gold both to bring in and turn out.

Hmmm, sounds like rather explosive changes of "personality"
I would be very careful around him meantime, and if he has another explosive burst like the one where he nearly got you in the chest I would consult your vet.
Have you checked his temperature?
Does he perhaps have some grumbling infection somewhere?
(Like in his head, following on from the eye infection?)

His TPR is fine, he was fine today and has been apart from these 3 little bursts of naughtyness, which is why I am rather confused what may be causing this as he is acting perfectly normal in any other situation and it isn't every time he is brought in.
