Recently posted about nieces little 12hh Welsh being naughty & stubborn & today vet says he may have Cushings..

..as hes peeing alot & still very much in winter woollies. Have read all about Pergolide etc but wondered (ignorantly!) - will he still be able to do his little jumping nights with my niece, or will he have to take it easy from now on....? No experience with Cushings so knew would get good advice on here. L

sometimes it can be contolled with medication and the horse can continue as normal with some exceptions, i know a horse with cushings where it bought on laminitis in the horse and was touch and go for a while, but he is now fine and is on medication and back to normal!

Thanx Miss Buffay, just re-read my post & sounds as if all I'm interested in is whether he can be ridden - that is not the case! Am worried sick about him, what to expect & how his quality of life will be. At the moment it has still to be confirmed that it is definately Cushings but everything is pointing towards that diagnosis so far.

If you post again with cushing in the thread title you will probably get more answers from people who have horses/ponies with it - and I would pop one in the Vet section as well. In the meantime have a look on the Laminitis Clinic website as they have info on there about Cushings - as previously mentioned they are more prone to laminitis as a result. The more info and research you can do now the better.

Both my horses have Cushings and they are still being regularly ridden. They are both on Pergolide. One is 27 the other 24 years old.

As long as there are no secondary problems e.g. laminitis there is no reason why a cushingoid pony shouldn't be ridden.

Pergolide does help in many cases although it doesn't always get rid of all the symptoms. It does seem to have become a lot cheaper lately which is good. There is a lot that can be done to help management - clipping, regular farriery etc so I don't see why your little guy can't carry on enjoying his jumping.
