How many have gone on to the dark side!!! Had a western weekend this weekend.First ever.Trainer good and efficient but I find I am having to try and unlearn a lot to learn more if you get the drift.Love western saddles though apart from the getting off.

Its such a buzz!
Lifelong English style showing rider and jumper here!
Positively captivated by western and just want to do patterns and barrel racing all the time!!
Bring it on!

I like it on this side - although I am probably a little more 'spangly' than 'dark'. I am not sure the Cotswolds were quite ready today for my sparkly Cowgirl Tuff T shirt, rhinestone sprinkled spur straps and twinkly Western gear.. ha ha!

Really interesting post for me, as my first loan horse was broken Western and came with Western tack, got really fed up with it, bought English tack and changed to English riding. Found the western stuff took too long tacking up, couldn't adjust cinch when on horse which was a complete pain, horn in the way when hacking and bending under low branches etc, saddle ridiculously heavy, blah, blah, blah................. However, I can see it would suit many people, just not me!

Me! I've gone from a 17 yr old cob, ridden in a pelham......four years later I have a just turned 7 yr old blanket spot appy x, who I've had from almost 4, ridden in a nosebandless bridle with split reins. I'm no spring chicken either (46) so it's been quite hard learning new tricks, but I love it.
At the moment, we are Western saddle-less, as he changed shape and grew out of the one I had originally ..so we're matching the Western bridle with my old trusty Barnsby GP at the mo. It's an interesting combo, til I save up enough to get a new Western saddle :)
I had to learn about Western rigging too: it's quite complicated cinching up til you get the hang of it, but once on, to fall off you'd probably have to chuck yourself off!!!

Where was your western weekend, eahotson? Sounds like you had a blast. I'll let you into a secret. I fell off the day after I first bought a Western saddle. Noone had explained to me about getting off or reminded me about the width of the swell, so as I swung my right leg back my knee connected with the swell which sent me shooting down horse's left shoulder to land in the sand like a drunk in the park. I'd never realised until then just how much fresh air surrounds a Western saddle, lol!!!

[On the list of things to only do once in life ;) ]
