Thought it would be an interesting thread to show the differences in everyone's horses from their fittest moment to their fattest conditon. I think it's amazing how much they can change & I'd love to see everyone's photos!

This is billy, at his fattest

I'm just digging out the 'fattest' photo (which is gross and she'll never get that big again) but came across these showing how much mine has changed from a 3yo - 6yo.

3yo

I'll dig out some photo's later as I'm at work now, but a few years ago my boy was almost 80kg heavier and on box rest for laminitis. He hated being ridden, hated in-hand work and I could barely leave the yard on him at all, let alone safely, which hadn't helped his weight issues.

Now he's ridden 5-6 times a week at this time of year, has learnt to canter, learnt to jump, hacks for hours on his own and absolutely adores being busy. We just need to crack our loading demon's and we'll be all set - he's a show off, so I think he'll love being out and about too!

There is hope out there for anyone struggling with a good-doer or the dreaded laminitis :)

Mine is not quite right, does from unfit to fit count?

This pic is the day I got him on January 2nd.

And this is him six months later at a show....

oo, we can play this game. However, she currently looks more like the former, thanks to nearly 5 months of very little work other than trudging miles over tarmac transitioning from shoes to no shoes. The first was a prelim 6 weeks after I started riding her. Then we had some lessons... 1 per fortnight, and the second is almost a year to the day, a Novice can't remember what, but I think we scored about 65%. Our best score at Novice was 68%. This morning I lunged her, and with a few tweaks including a massage or three and a saddle refit, and 30kgs off (her) and 10kgs off (me), I'm very much hoping we'll be back in the upper 60s in about 8 weeks time.

I still love Billy, fat or thin. I think I have a hankering for a patchwork pony.

hmm here we go...

Fattest - just backed 3 year old.

Thinnest - 4 year old at Royal Cornwall Show... he wasn't 'growing' as such... there was no height difference between him at 3 or 4, but clearly he was still doing a lot of development as this was June and was on 2 cups of linseed meal, ad lib hay, alfalfa and grass... more food that the 'nothing' he was on the year before!

This year... in full time 'proper work' 5 days a week.

I find him a little bit frustrating at the moment, I mean, he has solid muscle... great topline, is fit - works five days a week... 1 day lunging, schooling, hacking, jumping and at the moment averages 1 competition a fortnight (although 2 this week) you can 'feel' his ribs if you run your hands over his side lightly, but can't for the life of me see them! He is in at night with haylage and out at day on a paddock that is unfertalised. In the summer he refuses his measly grass chaff... so that is literally all he is on...

To me, he does not look fat and he certainly is fit, but I would love to have the security of seeing that shadow of his ribs! However, on the plus side, he's not a yo-yo horse, winter or summer work or not he looks the same... he had about three months off this winter and still came in looking like he does in the last two pics

Shows you how used we are to seeing chubby animals that I actually thought OP's 'fit' picture showed an underweight horse...

Fjord: oh my god, what a different! She is a credit to your efforts! Looking amazing.

This is not mine, but a friends PRE (in Spain) she was re-training. I can only get photos form this year but he was so skinny last year..(Apologies if the images go wrong, I'm not very good at this!)

Jan 2016 Unfit. Not a lot of muscle

This is Toque in his off season with no topline, big belly and look very hairy - and the next image is him midseason the same year. We sadly lost him last year, having retired him old age took over. It made me question whether we'd made the right choice retiring him, but hindsight and regret is a wonderful thing.
