Front shoes

I'm looking into loaning a horse and the owner said he only has front shoes on. I'm relatively new to the horse world and the horses I've loaned in the past have always had all 4 shoes on. Is there a benefit to only having 2? I'm assuming it would be cheaper with the farrier? Would it restrict the surface I could ride on? Thanks!
