I'm hoping someone on here can advise me from experience or perhaps a professional... Have had the dentist out today and my mare has damaged a front tooth. He reckons there's a chance it could get infected and need removing by the vet, but that front teeth are not as simple as molars so will probably need to go to a specialist vets.

She is insured but not for a huge amount of vets fees, so I wonder if anyone can give any idea how much it is likely to cost so I can start saving! Also, what would something like that involve, and what are the risks? What are the possible outcomes for her?

Thanks in advance if you can help!

One of the liveries had to have a lower front removed last year as it was broken and loose.
He went to the 'horsepital' to have it done, was away for about 5 hours and it cost just shy of £400! Aftercare was bute and flushing with iodine.
2 weeks later the tooth next door just fell out whilst he was eating his feed! A year on, he eats fine, no trouble being ridden just has a bit of an issue biting into a firm apple!

Oh thank you! This is a lot less bad than I was imagining - had all sorts of horrible images going round in my mind of weeks with drains etc!

if it is not very loose and wobbly i would wait and do nothing. get your dentist to talk to your vet (off the record) and get your vet to have a look when next out, before you make a decision. yes it might get infected, but then again it might not. dont sit on the fence and do nothing, get the dentist and vet talking and keep an eye on it. sort when it needs sorting. front tooth extraction can be quite a major process.

Mine broke upper and lower opposing front teeth a few years ago. Top tooth was snapped off halfway horizontally across and the bottom tooth had been sheared down the side vertically by about a third. The bit sheared off on the bottom tooth was just still attached but very loose and as almost down to the gum the vet removed under sedation and put him on antibiotics for a few days. She consulted with colleagues and view was not to do anything further unless infection set it which it didn't as full extraction could be worse. He lost another small bit off the top tooth a few months later but since then, fingers crossed all been good and teeth holding up fine and eating is definitively no problem, just ruined his big cheesy grin of a nice full set of teeth a bit!

A lady on my last yards horse had his front tooth removed, standing under sedation and he was fine, then the one next to it was removed shortly after. Im not sure of the cost but it was a quick straightforward proceedure. He coped fine. On the other hand my horse had a cheek molar removed under GA and it cost over £5k with all the aftercare. He was a young horse and apparantly the roots are much larger.
Im sure it will be fine, maybe ring your vets for an estimate of the costs.

Mine had a front removed standing in stable on yard. Cost £110 including call out on zone day and dental float for the molars and three lots of sedation! My vet is also an EDT :)
