The vet has suggested frontline for suspected leg mite treatment, but I was wondering if there is anything else I could use like small animal insecticidal shampoo(which kills mites in guineas). I have to await the prescription and frontline is pretty darned expensive too.

We used a selenium-based dog shampoo, combined with 3 days of double equvalan wormers to treat mites a few years ago. The frontline is cheaper and more effective

We've also tried a lotion and injection (can't remember what they're called), again not as good as frontline.

I also recommend the pig oil and sulfur treatment from Theresa, especially if you want to keep the feathers intact

We don't need a prescription for frontline for the cat, and it isn't particularly pricey either.

Why do you need a prescription for the horse? (Just curious!)

The cat frontline is the spot-on stuff. For the horses you need to use the spray for dogs, otherwise there isn't enough of it to be effective, and this is still prescription only.

I think it cost us £20ish for a 250 ml bottle, and it did at least 3 applications, so I don't think it's that expensive.

buy frontline in a spray pump for dogs.£15?
it is not licenced for horses so you have to say it is for your dog.
i applied it to my cob who used to itch her heels and sometimes stamp when i first got her.i used it 2 weeks apart several years ago and she has never done it since.
