Hi everyone, I just wondered if anyone knew if frontline spot on was any good for horses if they have heel mites and if anyone has used it? I have read the spray works but you can get the spot on without prescription so that would be easier as not sure if vet would give me the spray. My girl has very itchy heels and just wanted to treat as a precaution in case she has heel mites but have no idea if the spot on is suitable for horses, how you apply it and how much I would need as comes in different sizes, as i know it's for dogs really. I was only thinking of treating her once or whatever the course would be to get rid of them if she has them as she's never had them before.
Thanks for any advice

I think you'll find that frontline spot on is a prescription only medicine also. My cob had mites and i found clipping her legs and spraying with frontline spray very effective. You'll need to keep your horses legs clipped after especially in the summer xxxx

I had the same problem my vet actually told me to use frontline spray and clip his legs as much as possible, you can buy both the spray and the spot on off the internet without prescription

if you type it in google there are loads of websites that do it and its half the price you will pay from the vets anyway. Not sure the spot on would work to be honest???
hope that helps

Hi, thanks for your reply, I just wondered if you could recommend anywhere I can get the spray not on prescription? I worry about buying over the internet unless someone recommends somewhere they have used in case not genuine product. Equine pharmacy do the spot on without prescription but not the spray. Also is it an aerosol spray as not sure I'd get it on if it is, she doesn't like anything noisy and would be impossible I think unless quiet spray! Shes stamping this morning aswell. Do heel mites cause raw areas? The leg she is stamping is a bit pink and raw just on the heel, she has a bit of mudrash on other legs aswell but the raw patch doesn't look like mudrash as not got scabs on.
Thanks again Lucyx

My vet treats feather mites by 2 injections of Dectomax a week apart. You dont need to clip legs or do anything else!! The injections are about £15 each with call out.

Hi Spot on is available without prescription, but the spray is prescription only im afraid. I ve used the spray with great succes and my cob has floor length feather!! so you dont always have to clip if you dont really need to, with careful management etc it can be sorted.

I've just used the spray for harvest mites (on the head and legs). It is best to get the 500ml spray from your vet (get him to write a prescription and then you can get it online). The spray is not noisy.

Hi, thanks for your reply. have you had a good experience of deosect working for heel mites? That would be the easiest as no need for a prescription but it doesn't specifically say for heel mites when I read about it, just says for lice and flies.
Thanks , Lucyx
