I never turn our ponies out on frosty grass given they are both slightly laminitis prone. However, its -1 today here but the grass isn't frosty at all. So wondering whether to turn them out or not. Is it the frost on the grass we need to worry about or the temperature? Never really sure whether frosty grass or very cold temperatures and not frosty grass make a difference!! Any thoughts?!!

the temperature is the reason the grass increases the sugar store in anticipation of a freeze to stop they cells going pop.

if i was you and they are prone to it i would keep in, a couple of days of inconvenience and hand walking etc is better than weeks of box rest

I didn’t used to turn my ponies out if it was frosty but the grass is now so dire that I can guarantee they will just go straight to their hay anyway these days so have gone back to turning out every day.
