Frozen Padlocks !

What do people use on their Padlocks to stop them from freezing up - had to walk all way round field and come through fence! As Padlock not moving on Main gate!! this morning.

Works fine for be becaus sit evaporates it does not clag the lock over time like others.
De icers will work if you forgotten to protect them but bring the lock into the house to dry after .
In fact it a good idea to dry the lock out if you can before bad weather comes .
We rub the arches of rarely used paddocks with Vaseline that stops them rusting shut .
 
After a spell of wet weather and then a cold snap I try and remember to take all my padlocks into the house and put them on a radiator to dry out thoroughly for an hour or so. They then get oiled and put back out. This usually helps. Although this weather where it rains in the night and then freezes isn't helping at all. But the oiling definitely makes things easier as prevents the water from sitting in the lock.
 
I keep one of those gas candle lighter thingies in my bag in case my locks freeze. Just warming the padlock through a little by holding the flame under the keyhole frees them up in no time.
 
Use WD40 to displace water once thawed, then feed it with vaseline. Literally gob it in. Worked for me down to -15! I do the same for car locks. For cold forecasts make sure you top up with vaseline after you've locked up.
 
Those little hand warmer you click to warm and then boil to re-set. Click hold on padlock for few minutes and sorted :) WD40 is good preventative too.
 
Wish we'd had this thread yesterday, car and tack/feedroom were frozen solid this morning. De-icer on the lock didn't work so girls had to go out with hay in their field and no brekkie.
 
I always have warm hands so I just hold it until it has warmed up reminded me though I need to oil the locks at the yard. If you are man you could always pee on it that seems to do the trick too

I try to tip out any water from my main gate one when I leave at night, its treated to a WD40bath just before the winter & then liberally smeared with GT85 (spraycan) which usually does much of the winter :)
 
the chain and padlock were frozen to the gate this morning!, luckily i had my super warm gloves on so a bit of brute force and some padlock hugging and all was fine. used to use gun oil to keep the padlocks moving freely but i've broken the nozzle off the can, must find a replacement!!
 
Re external protection, we have a lock within the cable (like a cycle lock) on our gate, I slip part of a girth sleeve over it. It's an old neoprene one, protects it very well. My mum has made a couple of black paid drawstring bags for the ones at work, shame we didn't actually put them on last night!
