Does anybody have any experience with using frozen semen on older mares? The mare i am possibly looking at using it on is 21 (looks 14) in april and due to foal in 6 weeks time, the semen is 55%. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Be prepared for failure. Older mares tend to throw up more fluid and conception rate is generally lower with frozen to start with.

My old lady failed with frozen at 20yo - plan had been for frozen but the stallion colic'd the night before so rather than miss we took a chance with frozen. He had very good quality frozen but she threw up huge amounts of fluid and didn't take. Took no bother second cycle with fresh. She took to fresh the following year again with no bother.

We have had good success with older mares with frozen, especially if they have had a foal. I was told an interesting statistic that overall frozen is more successful than chilled for first inseminations. Maybe just need to be more organized!
