Frozen Water Troughs - HELP!

Anyone any tips for stopping the water trough in our field freezing over please?

I've tried everything and nothing works. Best thing is to break the ice in the morning. TBTH, I've got 5 out 24/7 and they are never thirsty in the morning as they get enough from the grass!

Leave a ball in the trough that way it will be easy to break through and start a hole in the ice

also it breaks the surface tension and makes it less likely to freeze unless it is really cold

I hide a hammer under the trough and then in the morning I just smash it up. Much easier than doing it with your foot!

Thanks, I will try the ball tonight, I have had no problem smashing it up, its just that this morning it was frozen solid, not even a bit of water underneath the ice

definitely try a ball, we use a tennis ball in the water buckets in the stables and in the troughs in the fileds.
