I spoke to my vets last night as i still have 2 'straws' in storage at the vets, which they are charging me £12 a month to keep there.

I have no idea at all what to do with it - to return it to the stud will cost me around £350, which i can not afford.

My theory was i might aswell just pay £12 a month and keep it at the vets, and then use it next year - however im not sure i want another foal from the same stallion.....

Can i sell it as its technically mine? Or am i bound by something from the stud i brought it from?

Not 100% sure but I think I have heard people explaining this before and the issue was getting a certificate from the stud, thus allowing you to reg. your foal. I think the stud only allow one certificate for each batch of straws, or so I have heard.....So you could get another foal (or someone else could) but you wouldn't be able to register it

Seems a shame to have it sitting there though doesn't it!

£12.00 a month for 2 straws is OUTRAGEOUS! Rules vary from stud to stud - but most will charge on a "per foal" basis, so they may not be too happy about you keeping it for another go... but then, they might be easy going about it. You need to ask really.

Endells did this to us as well- £10/month then though!
I think in the end we asked them to just chuck them as we didnt want to use that stallion again

I pay genus equine to ship semen (doesn't matter how many doses!) £50 and thats ship it out and they go back and collect the container 7 days later!!

My vet is currently storing around 35 doses of semen for me FOC and when I wanted to collect my semen that I had stored at a stud in sussex, he lent me his container for nothing!!!

Me thinkies your vet is earning tooooooooo much! I'm actually shocked at those charges! No wander AI has a reputation for being expensive!

**HGs going for a lie down now she has pulpatations at the thought of paying that much for storage and shipment!**

As I understand it usually f you paid for it per dose it is yours to resell, just call the stud to confirm you can get a 2nd covering cert. If you paid a stud fee you are more or less paying for a pregnancy therefore the semen is usually as they see it still owned by the stud that supplied it and therefore it is their responsibility to have it destroyed or pay for storage in my opinion.

You may have trouble exporting it back you would have to check the DEFRA regs, I know you can if you have used an EU approved storage centre as they have seperate tanks for semen that has been imported and not been released to clients yet and semen that has been imported dispatched around the UK to vets and returned to them for storage again.

hmmmmmm so the general consensous is that i could use it next year, but wouldnt be able to register the foal.....and that im being ripped off by my vet!!

Unfortunately i have nowhere else to store it as i know nothing about this sort of thing. Its alright for all you guys who do this as your business, but for us meer mortals who are doing it as a one off its not really the same thing!!

There are lots of places that store semen that would be able to help out by storing it at a more affordable rate. Some places could probably offer your prices like £2-3/month or less.

Which stallions is it and we may be able to help you with more info or as to whether you can sell or if there is another solution ie are there other stocks of this boy that it could be consolidated with. If you dont want to use it it is obviously good semen it seems a shame to chuck it down the drain!!

They are in holland - im going to email them and find out what they suggest, as they are really nice and helpful.

Another question - when do i get a covering certificate?

i brought it direct from the stud in holland (or somewhere like that!!) as he wasnt avaliable at the time through World Class, and hes not on Elites 'books' at all. I had to do it all myself (which was VERY stressful!!)

I might just add, it was £350 to transport it which i organised myself through West Kingston Stud - they had to go to the stud in holland to collect it, then fly it back and transport it to my vets. Included in that was the hire of the nitrogen flask, as i had to arrange all this myself. Oh, and then pay to have the flask returned to West Kingston

No resale I think you will find, call Jeanette but I think once you have a pregnancy thats it and she retains ownership of an semen that is why she gives such good terms and conditions of sale. WCS def have Johnson in storage now so Jeanette can return it to them and they will pay the storage for her so it can be used in 2008.-

Jesus £350 is really really expensive !!!

Give Jo a call at World Class Stallions she is really helpful - tell her the situation you are in and im sure she would be able to help you out !!

Is Johnson from Nijhoff ???

Pembers Stud store Semen, I'm sure if you give them a ring they can advise on what they charge and the best and cheapest way to transport it. They are near Eastleigh so not for from you?

I had 1 straw left but as I paid a stud fee it wasn't really any use to me.

Well your not overly far from Andy Pandy, he's in Gloucestershire, I'm sure he'd be able to help you on Transport and Storage. Or theres Willesley Equine Clinic where I have some of mine, thats Tetbury Glos, they have a transport container and store frozen semen.

Your covering certificate will be issued by the KWPn once your mares breeding has been reported to them by the stallion owner, and they will only report it once the inseminator has certified the mare in foal to the stallion owners.
The KWPN will send an invoice for the certificate which you can pay over the phone by credit card. The KWPN then issue you with a covering certificate which can be retuned to them along with your foals passport vet skethc pics and DNA or much easier take the foal along to a KWPN keuring and they will do everything there for you, no need for photos or DNA so much easier!

Very nice choice, he did very well recently in Germany holding his own against the top German stallions. Be sure to share pics next year!

Lovely canter!

i think im just going to get rid of it to be honest, theres not really much point in me keeping it, as i wont put her straight back in foal next year, and i dont really want another foal from the same sire.

Talk to the stud though they may want to return the semen to one of their agents in the UK rather than it being destroyed. Those straws could be another pregnancy to that stud
