Hi everyone,

My daughter's lovely pony has been diagnosed with low-grade laminitis caused by fructose intolerance. Our vet is recommending he never be turned out on grass again, which means at the yard we are on, no turn out. I am not happy about this and wanted to put him down (he's a tough little native who loves to live out) but my YO has suggested putting him on working livery to keep him active and stimulated at the yard we are on. I'm not sure how much of a long term solution this will be so I am looking for any suggestions as to how to control his condition and let him have some qaulity of life. We have only had him 18 months and this was not a problem last year as the grass was sparse and bare in the fields thanks to the draught. So clearly there is a level of sugar in the grass that he copes with, albeit a very low one. Any suggestions as to supplements, homeopathic treatemtns etc, will be gratefully recieved. I also think there is a device you can get for measuring sugar levels of pasture? No idea what it is though! Thanks in advance!

can't you create a turn out area with sand/ wood chips etc?
they did this at a yard for a couple of bad laminitics.
they lived there almost 24/7 with hay.
you might have to move yards but better than being in for the rest of his life.
but if he is the sort that would tolerate living in with plenty odds exercise why not give it a go?

There are options, though not necessarily easy ones. Send a pm to Shilasdair; I'm sure she had one that couldn't tolerate any grass.

I hope you can work something out x
