The mare has a horizontal crack around the back of the hoof about 1 inch long round to the cleft of frog, we poulticed, tubbed, mag sulphated but still ended up having to put her on antibiotics, she's had one course and had to go on to a stronger dose and bute because she was on three legs. What i can't understand is the vet that came each time would not dig around so i don't know how deep the crack goes, surely he would want to know incase it needed flushing or paring away as if there is still dirt in it (which is highly possible) the infection will just return. just seems daft to me filling her full of antibiotics without treating the cause?

Thanks for that .That was my first suggestion and it is good to hear i'm not alone, but the vet said not to as he was treating it (wierd i know cos usually vets and farriers work together) he is supposed to be the expert.

Glad you didn't think I was a bit sharp, I didn't mean to be!

Ah, but vets can and do charge more and don't know half as much as a decent farrier when it comes to the feet anyway! My vet was saying that if he did a week's training on the foot before qualifying he was lucky and he always recommends the farrier if it's something he's not happy or knowledgeable to deal with; as you say, they normally work together with something like that and most vets make a cack handed job of anything about feet anyway IME!
Can you get your farrier to see horse and what he thinks or can do to speed up healing, it's so frustrating when things drag on unnecessarily?

My horse has horizontal crack about 1 inch long and the farried had a dig yesterday. His didnt go very deep so didnt affect him although he is lame with something. If its dug out at least you will know if its only superficial like my horses was.We thought there was a abcess but its not the crack causing problems.

Just had the foot xrayed and she has a fracture in the foot. the vet thinks the crack & fracture are the result of her maybe kicking her stable wall. gutted
