Do full cheek snaffles need keepers? I keep seeing images online of people using keepers for full cheek snaffles, not fulmers. I assumed you needed them for fulmers as they are loose ringed?

Or can you add them if you want? Is there a benefit with a full check? I’m about to try one on my horse and wondered if I need to get the keepers too! Thanks

Only used on the fulmer snaffle - where the rings are totally separate to the cheeks. If the full cheek is part of/attached to the bit ring (which is then not a loose ring) you don't need the keepers. The keepers just keep the bit in the correct position in the mouth and stop it over-rotating. I wouldn't use a fulmer without them as it wouldn't sit correctly, but never had a problem with other more modern types of full cheeks, which are mostly used now.

They’re not really needed with full cheeks as stated.

I did have one who liked the bit to be as fixed and stable in his mouth as possible; he preferred keepers with a full cheek. Other bit he liked was a baucher for the same reason.
