Full clip & living out...

My boy had full clip (legs on still) yesterday & I still left him out overnight with a MW rug on.

Who has horses that are fully clipped & still living out & how do you find they're doing?

I thought about popping heavier rug on but it's going to get colder than it is now isn't it so don't want to rug him up too much just yet. I think it's only in the rain that he might feel the cold more isn't it?
 
Mine have trace clips and live out (obviously rugged up) - but they do have a field shelter.

I think a clipped horse living out is OK as long as they have some shelter in the field, ie can find a breezier or more sheltered spot so they have a bit of control over their temperature.

In general, I don't think horses mind being cold or wet, just the two together they hate!
 
I do this with my full TB mare. She is a very good dooer! Impossible to get the weight off her most of the time, so when its really cold she just has a cotton sheet, a fleece and a HW turn out, atm shes still in a meidum weight but when it starts getting colder il put the HW one on. I havnt had a problem with doing this yet, she seams happy to be out all the time and it works best for me.
 
Zoomy has a full clip with half head and legs and she is out 24/7. She now has a wool day rug on and her full neck LW over the top. I'm going to put her medium weight on tonight since it has turned colder.

She was clipped 3 weeks ago and hasn't been cold. She was actually out last week in just her lightweight with no fill since it was so warm and was out two hours on Thursday in..................nothing!!!!!
 
Not this year, but plenty of times in the past I've hunter clipped my old girl (leaving on half face and legs) and wintered her out

He has a fair amount of natural shelter - I can vouch that the trees do help keep the rain off a bit having being stood under one in torrential rain recently while poo picking!
He's quite a substantial sort who doesn't feel the cold unless he's wet thro so do you guys think he'll be ok with that on over night?
I'm not sure when he'll be coming in - he prefers to stay out so I'll try to leave him out as long as poss & maybe just have him in when there's bad weather forecast overnight?
 
As long as he is warm enough I see no problem.
Two of my companion pony's live out 24/7 with trace clips and no rugs. I have to clip them as they get too hot in winter in their own coats.
 
I do, Dibbs has everything off including mane and legs, he is living out this year for the first Winter in 2 years, before that he happily lived out.

I don't get any problems to be honest, he is such a hot horse and if I need to (if it's really wet and/or windy) I'll put a HW full neck turn out rug with a fleece/stable rug underneath.

I never let him get wet, if there's a slight chance of rain he gets at least a rain sheet on.
 
I've clipped my big horse for the first time this year as she gets too sweaty after our lessons and hacking etc. She is out full time after her clip currently in a no fill rain sheet, even this morning after the torrential night last night she was warm and happy.
 
No prob at all. Apparently now there is research to say its heathier. As long as they are warm & fed. We've done it for years - ours do stay in for example on a Fri night then hunt Sat then go back out Sun morn, then stay out till Tues after work - they have a lesson Wens eve & back out Thurs morn. Trace clipped - lots of rugs & food & lucky to be in sheltered area - tho we do get lots of rain but luckily not bad underfoot. One thing I'd like to do is clip their heads out - I don;t as they are out & think thats not fair - but would love to hear off anyone who knows of a good hood that covers the face that really is waterproof & will not slip over their eyes (my big fear is a hood slipping over their eyes when I'm in work & them banging into something - better to have an itchy head than a bump!!) Anyone have any ideas>?

I have a snuggy turnout hood which is fab but it rubbed his mane out last winter!!!!!!
 
My TB mare, lives out 24/7 who has recently been full clipped (half head full legs on , so more of a hunter clip really) a shes out in middleweight and still feels quite warm and toasty:) this is a mare that does tend to feel the cold really easily!
 
mine is fully clipped and lives out 247 - she has a field shelter and is rugged well - was fully clipped 1 sept legs, head the works, then reclipped leaving legs and saddle patch - she has head off too.
she is fine as long as enough grass/hay and rugged well theres no problem i dont think
 
I have tried keeping fully clipped horses fully out and just out for a few hours and they honestly do better out full-time. As long as they get plenty of hay/haylage and have good rugs, thay are fine. Although no-one would probably have done it 20 years ago, the rugs we have now are a million times better so it is possible
 
Mine is fully clipped with a half face and legs left on and out all the time, well he would be if he hadn't been kicked so he had a couple of days in last week, was also in last night as i was late to the yard and it was chucking it down.
He was out today in just a lw with neck and was quite warm under it but i put his mw on for tonight as it was feeling quite cold.
He tends to loose a bit of weight but that happens more often when he is staying in rather than living out.
 
2 of mine are fully clipped and live out 24/7. they currently have plenty of grass but once thats gone theyll have adlib haylage. atm they only have rainsheets on as its been so mild
 
mine are hunter clipped and out 24/7 in rain sheets, and a bit hot in the day!!! i sat here in a tee shirt and havent put the heating on and all the top little windows are open still!!! what will all you in MW and HW do when it actually gets cold???
 
my old boy always lived out full clipped and so far new one has too, although he did drop off towards spring this yr with hunting hard so might have to bring him in at some point. he's got his legs and half head left on and is currently in a MW in the day and HW with some kind of neck cover or snuggy hood at night. I know it's gonna get colder, but it's around 6 degrees most nights so he'll be fine in just a HW until it gets down to freezing overnight and then he'll probably get a LW under-rug or a LW turnout over the top for extra warmth. when it snowed earlier this yr he was wearing a HW under-rug and HW turnout combo.
