I have a horse going to a Spa for treatment on his tendon as of tomorrow (i only found out today)

Now she is on full ivery (not including hard feed) but 7 day muck out, all hay, bedding etc

Would you just charge her for the stable

or Stable and groom (as i still have to pay her whether the horse is there or not)

or the full price

???

My horse is on part livery and when we went home for christmas for two weeks, YM reduced it to DIY rates.
Bit unfair you only found out today though!!
Id be tempted to charge her more just because she didnt give you any notice! Stable and groom maybe??

Well vet came out Monday and didnt think there would be enough space to take him straight away but there is - the lady is very sweet and i know she wouldnt do it on purpose also works out best as she is going back to germany for 2 weekends !!

Im guessing the sooner her goes the better really x

we would charge stable and groom...assuming that she wants to come back that is....otherwise you could be abliged to fill the stable

Thats different then! I thought maybe shed known for a while and only just told you!!
As lexiedhb says you wouldnt expect a reduction in rent, but it depends on what you think really, i wouldnt expect my livery to drop from part to diy over the summer when horse lives out, but i might only expect to pay a retainer over the summer if horse went home.

I would deduct an amount for bedding and hay, and charge for the stable and groom - not her fault she didn't give you notice, but not your problem that her horse has to go away for treatment! I am sure she will be expecting to pay anyway.

Personally, I would be inclined to only charge for basic box and turnout (in other words, just the space the horse takes up, not for extras like feed/bedding as it won't be using any. As for groom, I'm sure she would appreciate one box less to do for a few days too!); it all helps with PR and I think clients appreciate that you don't want to take them for a ride either which follows on with recommendations.

I'm on part livery (£78/wk) and when I went on holiday last year I sent my horse to my trainers (boot camp!!). I paid £20/wk to retain my stable while away, which I think was fair enough.
I'm moving yards on Sat but am paying a months retainer on my stable just in case it doesn't work out and I'm being charged £100 for that (YO isn't the best at consistent prices!!), but its piece of mind for me so no problem paying it.
You should def charge a reduced rate - maybe full livery minus feed and bedding - what would that work out at??

I think stable and groom seems fair, i wouldnt mind if someone charged me that to keep my stable whilst my horse wasnt there! Livery yards have to keep good relationships with the customer, but customers need to understand how hard it is to run a successful livery yard! I appreciate everything my YM does for me, and would happily pay more than she charges!

I have been on full livery...and was charged for my box as a retainer...once when I took my horse away for a month and once when she went to hospital.
I thought that was reasonable...I wasnt using any feed, bedding, groom time or field space.
Mind you one of the yards was quite large and owned/run by the YO/M...so no rent involved.
I think I actually paid the smaller yard more as a retainer...

I would suggest she pays a retainer to cover the stable and groom. But include the weekend grooms costs.

After all you are running a business not a charity! If the weekend groom has less to do then take advantage of that to give yourself a bit of a break or to get other jobs done but you should never be out of pocket because of someone elses problem

My Yard charges for the stable & groom. Normal livery is £92 p/w & when he's not there it's £50 pw. You have to bear in mind they still need to pay for the groom even if they are not having to do your horse, but they do save on bedding, hay & feed.
My boy was in & out of the vets last year so I was doing this a lot & was very grateful for the reduction in livery as I was paying the vets £18 a day for him to be in there

thats basically what i would be charging i think !!

I'd say just charge retainer for the box - she isn't going to be using the groom's services and I'm sure the groom could be found work elsewhere on the yard? Depends how easily the cost of the groom doing that horse could be absorbed I suppose, but the horse's owner is likely to be shelling out a lot for horse's treatment so anything that can be saved would make a big difference to her.

How long is the horse going to be away for? If a matter of days still charging for the groom is one thing, if a matter of weeks I'd probably be more happy from my conscience point of view with charging for the groom the first week, say, and basic retainer the rest of the time.

Or, if you really felt you had to charge for the groom could they do all those jobs we never usually get around to in the alloted time it would otherwise take to do the horse, i.e. deep clean her stable, clean and oil all her tack, arrange for rugs that won't be needed to be cleaned and stored, wash the grooming brushes etc, paint the stable etc?

If it was me I'd be grateful for any reduction, but a bit miffed to be paying for a service I wasn't using. Doing little extras or the promise of something in lieu would be a nice gesture, e.g. offer her horse a lift back from the spa if she doesn't have her own transport, and explain "I'm sorry I couldn't reduce XYZ as I was still paying for it, but since you didn't need to use the services I'd like to give you a goodwill gesture of xxx" - even flowers, a bottle of wine and a likkit in the stable ready for when she gets back would be a kind gesture she won't forget in a hurry.

Sorry, its an essay!

IMO i think you should charge just a very small fee (like £10per week)..... as you know horses is coming back after treatment.

Plus if going to vets for big treatment i think it's nice thoughtfull thing to do for client..... good will and all that

If folks are taking away for holiday or another reason FULL price to be paid or lose stable....

the insurance is paying for all treatment !!!!

also my groom is my best friend she works god damn hard and runs the whole yard for me !! she does everything possible as it is

I normally pay £242 per month part livery and while my horse was away at re-hab for a couple of months I only got charged £100 a month for holding the stable. I think I might be on the most reasonable nicest yard there is though. It must be nice for yard owners to be liked and not resented by their clients so any good will gesture you can make should make for a better relationship, as long as it doesn't leave you out of pocket.

exactly i wouldnt expect her to pay ful price unless it was only for a couple of days !!!

hopefully a friend needs the stable for 3 weeks so she wont have to pay a thing and everyone will be happy xx

Well I'm on DIY but it is assisted and includes Hay and Bedding. If we go away we can retain the stable by paying a substantially reduced amount, this takes into account we won't be using the hay/bedding or assistance. We do have to give notice though and it has to be agreed.

My horse is on full livery Mon-Fri and part livery Sat & Sun. When a horse goes off our yard for training or to a spa our YO charges us nothing! I think we are very lucky I've never know that before - I've always been charged for my stable and I've been happy with that.
