Full livery - who does not go to yard every day

My circumstances may change and I may not get to see my pony every day - currently I do. He will be on full grass livery at a super yard and checked daily - he is currently living out so no change there.

The main difference will be I will probably only get to see him once during the week and then on both weekends days and then take half days off from work if I want to see him more and I might not easily be able to get to the yard on the days I don't go if there is an emergency so will be more reliant on yard to look after him. I am not worried about the standard of his care as he will be in pony heaven just how I will cope as I will miss him so much and might feel guilty about not being there for him.

Hi SO1 - when Sunny was in full livery, I could only get up at the weekends and odd days off. If the standard of horse care at your livery yard is as good as you would give, then your ned will be fine and you would have no reason to feel guilty. Are you able to leave your mobile phone on at work so they could text you with a daily "ok" or if any problems? Are you able to pop in for 10 mins at the end of every day? People across the UK keep their horses in all sorts of different livery arrangements. The important thing is that you have a happy ned and he remembers that you are important in his life. I do understand what you mean coz now Sunny is in DIY livery, I love the closeness!

Definately will be able to be in phone contact but might be a couple of hours away so not able to pop into see him.

The standard of horse care is the same as I would give as he lives out has done all his life - he is only 6 - this is what he likes as he is not keen on stables - so the only difference is that someone else would be checking him instead of me and he would not get ridden and groomed every day and I would miss him - I would definately get to see him 3 days a week as one day a week I leave early as I work late on other days.

I would spend the whole day with him most weekends.

I see my boy 3 days a week, i used to see him everyday, it's hard at first but after about 6 months you kind of get used to it. Horses need their own brake as well my horse also lives out 24/7 i find he's a lot calmer and better behaved the days i can go up and ride him.. he's also at a great yard with lot's of people there to phone if anything is wrong.

TBH if he's well looked after then he wont mind! Only if you didnt see him for a couple of weeks do I find horses can (and only some) start to sulk! and then only with owner who is normally there every day. If he has an Auntie (ie a good yard owner/staff who care for him and he knows), then only you will suffer by not seeing him, he will not be bovvered!!!!

Sounds like will be a similar situation to you my boy lives out too so it is not as if he is stuck in a stable with nothing much to do if I don't see him - he is a bit of a mummy's boy though!

Everybodies circumstances are different, they way they live, work, family, mange their horses, the times people ride and the amount of time they spend with their horses etc ....all varies.

People have to do what suits their personal circumstances, what fits with the way they live while making every effort their horses are cared for in the best possible way, if this means full livery and someone else checking on your horse...then so be it. I don't think your horse will have any complaints, as long has he's got good food, water, equine company and someone to check him daily, then when he does see you it will be a real treat for him....plus you can spoil him rotten on the times you do....which again I doubt your horse will complain to that neither!

Of course in an ideal world we'd all like to see our horses everyday, care for them everyday but its not always possible....and that's what livery yards are for, to provide horse owners with a service.

So don't feel too guilty about it, you have to do what you have to do.
