I am putting my horse out on full loan and need to draw up a contract but i've never done this before so i'm not sure of the wording. I basically want to say that this is a 6 month agreement and they cannot sell him on. What else do I need to consider? Also, what do I pay for and what do I ask them to pay for?? Thanks

If you go on the BHs website they have a draft agreement and could can just fill in the blanks and add in anyhting else you want.

I used it when I loaned my boy. Remember to be clear on insurance and an accurate equipment list.

Hope this helps

I think there is a sample on the BHS website that you can adapt and use but these are important things that you need to consider; I'm sure that others will have more to add as well:
- what you are supplying the horse with eg. tack, boots, rugs; this can go in an inventory after the main loan agreement
- address of where the horse is going to be kept
- how insurance will be paid for (when I loaned a horse I set up a standing order with the owner so the insurance was still in her name but I paid it, I paid for everything)
- when the horse's injections are due if necessary
- any pre-existing conditions that the horse has which may affect the level of work he can do e.g. COPD, arthritis
- any supplements/medication that you want your horse to have
- any other specifics e.g. shavings bed, remedial farriery
- whether the horse is allowed to be competed or not, or anything else relating to work
- acceptance of any behavioural issues e.g. headshaking
- to contact you in case of emergency/if anything goes wrong and that you will have him back if necessary

I think that is all... hope I've helped

Many horses have sadly dissapeared while on loan.
Once you have ammended the BHS loan agreement to your requirements get a specialist equine solicitor to check it to ensure it will stand up if there was a court case.
Also ensure that you ask for the original copy of the passport, driving licence and rates bill of the person loaning the horse so that you know their true identity. Photocopy these documents and keep them in a safe place. Also check the yard/home that the horse will be kept at and continue to check regularly.

Yes I would personally keep your horses passport, there are lots of contracts you can pick bits out of that you want to add on google. I would say tho from a previous thread on here that you add in that if at any point you feel there is a welfare issue or simply you want her back that you can at any time without notice bring her home.
also that you will visit her on occasions some of which will not be announced (good for checking what they are really doing with her)
its horrible to think like this but with loans going wrong, and this is your horse.
I would also get someone legal to check it for loopholes etc :)

I used the BHS loan agreement (although I had to amend it quite a bit as I've loaned my pony to a riding school).

I also attached an 'info sheet' with my pony's quirks, likes and dislikes and his management history - what he'd been fed, vaccination dates, medical history, plus contact numbers for vet, farrier and dentist.

I have just taken a horse on loan for my daughter and we used the BHS agreement and tweaked it to suit. I know the owner very well but we felt a written agreement was still important. I have the horses passport and pretty sure the person loaning needs to have it, especially of the intend on travelling to shows etc. Is the horse staying close by?

I have a contract with location of where horse is kept, both copies signed by both parties and also a witness signed them both.

I have all the tack and rugs also written on contract, what he can and can't do with subject to competing.
I have copy of insurance as I will taking the payments on
I have a copy of passport owner kept original (not sure how this is going to work when jabs are due) he's due next month... I did ask this at the time owner said the vet can go to her yard and sign the original when they next visit all I can do is get vet to write it in copy I guess.
The owner doesn't know me from adam, so can't blame her for not giving me originals, she going to come and check once every 6wks or so, and we have a review date too as I am buying after loan period so slightly different there.

Just make sure you get covered from every angle, obtain reference's from farrier, vets etc.

good luck and not all loan stories are horror ones there are some lovely people out there too.
