Ok so last winter Jemima lived in a full neck rug (I took the neck off when it was mild but let's face it last year was BBRRRRRR!) By the end of winter she had no mane left, I struggled to plait it and when it grew back she looked like a porcupine. I vowed this year she wouldn't wear it - however it's on already

Is there anything I can do to stop this happening again?

Help!!

Mane and Tail conditioner! I'm on a loosing battle already, as I managed to rip half of madams mane out the other day when she walked off when I was getting on! However, I have slathered her mane in mane and tail conditioner in the hope if will reduce friction.... plaiting it is meant to help too.....

Ditto KatB - I had a baaaaaad half mane last year (but she came with it, in my defence!). Now she's back in the field (grrrr) she's back in a hood but with megatek conditioner applied liberally, and I'm considering sewing a silk insert into the rug too....

Not sure if I have misread but I think you are saying the rug neck cover rubbed it out? If so this happened with my mare too. Two things I found stopped it 1) snuggy turnout hoods are brilliant and can be washed regularly or 2) if you dont use a hood, you need to keep the inside lining of the neck cover very very clean as the grease builds up on it and then acts like velcro with the hair, literally pulling it out. I tried the conditioner but found that it worked for a while but then it just added to the dirt build up on cover.

I know some people are a bit wary of turnout hoods from a safety aspect so thats obviously something to consider as well but I couldnt have lived last winter without my one! My mare is grey so it kept her clean too.

Is your rug nylon lined? If not get one that is as it really helps reduce rubbing. I find certain makes - Rambo for one - rub mine but others - Fal, Premier Equine and, surprisingly, Weatherbeeta, don't.

No - it's a brushed cotton lining which is so cosy but I fear the root of my problem! Not going to change the rug but I might try and re-line the neck cover with a different fabric - thanks :)

Yes it is the neck cover that's rubbing it out. thanks for the tip about the snuggy hoods - I'll take a look :)

Skye has got the most bushy unruly mane at the top and the thinnest scraggiest mane at the bottom that always used to get rubbed out, however i managed to stop this by keeping her warm but not overly warm, keeping her mane really really clean and what made the most difference was attatching some velcro to the inside of my neck cover then buying a strip of silk and attatching some velcro to that as well and attatching it into my rug. I was then able to remove the silk and wash it every week to keep it really clean. Worked wonders with my girl, however i now take the easy option and cause her mane is such a bushy horrid mess and she won't let me pull it without killing me i just hog her!

Baby oil liberally applied every evening to the mane. This seems to do the trick. My horse has a big stallion like neck and always looses the base of his mane, but baby oil is helping so far (I hope!)

Having had to compete at Winter Regionals with 3 plaits, we've just opted for the no-neck rugs this year. Where we are (and I'd wager, most of the UK), they don't really need full neck rugs for warmth.

I find Equistar spray really helps. Seems to just provide enough of a barrier that her mane doesn't rub out, I spray it on the lining of her neck cover too:

It's pretty hard to come by in the UK though!

The only problem is it conditions really well, so mane is hard to plait for a couple of days after use. Fab all-round product, love the stuff :D

Pinches all the ideas - thanks for posting this ISZ!!
I cant be doing with the half punch look come March ......

YES............. Get a Mark Todd Combo Under Rug!!! You will NEVER have a rubbed mane again :D

Sorry but Bloss had one of these and her mane was the worst it had been!! It rubbed out half way up in about 2 weeks of wearing it!!

Rugs with detachable neck bits - the ones which just have a couple of clips to attach it on to the rug - are the best as the allow more freedom of movement in the neck, also need to be nylon lined. Or just get a fleece snuggy hood for in the stable and a turnout one for when they are out. They dont move at all and are great.

ISZ you think you've got it bad?..... I accidentally clipped half Soap's mane off 3 weeks ago and now it's starting to make a reappearance!!!! The only benefit of a neck rug is it's training the stubble to behave and lay flat, phew!

I 2nd a nylon lined rug they slip better so no rubbed shoulders or manes, but depends really on the shape of your horse. I use protuff rugs coz they are big fitting in the neck (neck areas are a nice big triangle shape) and nylon lined, and best of all cheap!!!! atm they are out of stock though :(

Liberally apply Megatek to her mane every few days. Also try and limit the time the neck cover is on. The same thing happened to my mares mane last year and this year she is only allowed to wear her neck cover during the day out in the field. Fingers crossed this system will work!

i had the same problem last year- and V has the thickest Bog pony mane ever! i'm trying the snuggy hood route this year... plus he looks super cute in it :D he wears that at night and then in the day is turned out with no neck on at all (partly because he's broken the two turnout rugs that i own that have necks)- hoping that will be enough to save his mane! :)

See mine don't seem to loose their manes at all?! Both have mark Todd heavyweight combos, nylon lined. Roo's mane looks better at the moment than ever in the summer after a week of being squashed flat by the neck cover!!
Definately silky lined neck parts and also generous fit to rugs helps I think? And also mine don't have anything on their necks at night, which helps too I think.

Buy a horse with a super thick mane like Nugget, you will want to put a neck on it to try and get rid of some!!!

Quite agree- my Irish mare has a mane like a hedge at Badminton.....

Though in general, I find putting those lycra neck covers/ hood things, no underneath you full neck rug helps a lot.
