I often do the photography for the arab stud where my share is, and doing pictures of them running free in the school they all seem to charge at me! I think it's when they're scared, they think it must be the safest place to be. Or on their way back to charging at the gate. They usually settle down after they've been there a few days though.
Sweetly my share gelding moved in between me and a charging colt in the field once. I'd like the think he was protecting me, but i think he just wanted to block the gate so he could be first in
It does make the old heart miss a beat, my old mare doen this all the time and would then skid to a halt and half the time i would have my eyes closed hoping she would stop before i had a lump of a horse sitting on my chest. Thankfully she always did.
Now the youngsters doing it dont trust so much, but i still have to stand there but close my eyes tighter and wait lol
One of my best memories of my old now departed mare is the sight of her thundering down the paddock towards me in moonlit snow - absolutely fabulous and purely horsey exuberance, glad to see me and looking forward to her bucket! My Mrs never has greeted me like that!!!
My YO asked me to feed her horse one evening as she was away. I merrily strode into the field with the bucket and had 17.2hh of horse bearing down on me at full gallop - he skidded to a halt and did a very impressive rear right above me, before settling down and sticking his head in his bucket. When I told her the next day - she said "Oh I should have told you never to go in his field with the bucket - just slide it under the fence". Thanks for that!
I went to bring in some ponies years ago, I shouted and they all came flying towards the gate - boy was I glad I'd stayed outside the gate! They all skidded to a halt at the gate and sent a shower of mud all over me!
