I am going away for a month and looking to send my horse away to have some professional training. She is only 5, so I think this month will help her. I am thinking of sending her to a eventer, as this is what I potentially want to do with her.
I currently have her at home so don't really know about livery costs.
I am thinking she would get 2 x schools, 1 jump, 1 lunge and 1 hack per week and possibly take her out cross country schooling. She would only need a couple of handfuls of chaff per day so hard feed does not need to be included in the cost.
I have been quoted about £200 per week, does this sound about right. This is with a event rider rider in Hertfordshire.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!:)

It kind of depend on the level of the person you are sending to. For a smaller name I would expect in the region of £150-170 per week, higher profile name then £200 isn't unreasonable

Thanks for all your help everyone!
Yes I suppose you have to consider area too, as costs of bedding, hay/haylage vary and your right level of professional rider.
When you think it's £35 for a lesson/horse schooled x 3, £20 for a hack/lunge x 2 equals £145 plus stabling, bedding etc it all adds up!

My mums horse went to a dressage riders yard for training. He was schooled every time he was ridden by the dressage rider herself, not the gooms. I think he was ridden 5x a week and lunged the other days. It cost £250 a week or £1,000 for a month. He really did get 5 star treatment.

That was surrey/hants boreder and a GP rider.

Do make sure you put your horse in a smaller yard as they get more individual attention and make sure you know who is riding. Iv'e heard of horror stories where people have sent their horse off and it was ridden only once or twice by the event/dressage rider and the rest of the time the horse was ridden by WP's. One horse even developed a bolting habbit while at a 4* event riders yard when on schooling because it was ridden by a WP who didn't know what they were doing .

If she was with me, current conversion rate puts it at £760/month, which I think is fairly reasonable and very cheap for my area.

Whilst Firewell is right to point out the need for vigilance (as you should whenever you entrust your horse to a stranger!) remember that having a WP ride once a week or so will probably do the horse good - so long as you know who it is, have seen their ability and confirmed you are happy.

Whoever you go with, make sure you have your exceptions set in stone - and writing! If you only want the pro riding, make sure they accept this, can deliver and accept that the price may rise accordingly. If possible, see if you can watch the hose ridden a few times, or come up to see her, to make sure all is well. Or you could do as I offer, and ask for a lesson once a week or so, that way you can feel the improvement yourself, and make sure you're hitting the right buttons when the horse returns home.

I pay £26 per day which is £182 a week.
That includes going on the walker everyday, being exercised everyday despite the weather as they have an indoor school and all hard feed and haylage are included.
He is ridden by my trainer who has competed at Inter I level dressage so I know he is in good hands, tack always comes back cleaned to and he is always in fab condition and trimmed etc.

This is also only on a holiday basis.

I used to pay £120 a week for full schooling livery which I had 2 horses on whilst doing my a levels and they were always busy.

I charge 175 a week for schooling livery on my dressage yard, i have trained horses to competing Inter 1, working GP at home, and all liveries are ridden by me, the price includes everything apart from farrier and vet bills. I have an indoor school so horses can be worked in all weathers, and are turned out daily, tack cleaned etc. I am based in South Warwickshire, and i think thats a fair price for the service provided.

I charge £120 per week including all feed, haylage, bedding, exercise 6/7 x week, transport within a reasonable distance (XC schooling etc). Based in Essex. I have ridden to 2* level, being qualified to ride advanced, reserve junior euro's GB team 2008, previously point to point ridden and placed SJ HOYS. Just a comparison! :)

My trainer is based in Essex. he charges between 150 and 200pw. This includes full livery, shavings, haylage, feed, suppliments, schooling 6/7times per week, groomed every day, tack cleaned, horse has full use of all facilities i.e. walker, jumping field, turnout etc. He is a very accomplished and stylish rider, having won at many big show including HOYs. He is the only person i trust to care for and ride my horse properly. I think price varies according to rider levels, but if your happy with how they ride your horse then the price is fine!

Really, really depends who it is. I use a pro who has a great BE record who is £150 a week. I know of a few people in Herts advertising as 'pro' riders - but check out the BE record for yourself and ask around for opinions. I'm in Herts and my horse isn't..........that may tell you something?

I do know of one yard in Hertfordshire that is £235 a week and well worth it though, so as I say, really depends on who the 'pro' is.......

PM if you want more specific details :)
