I don't put keepers on my Fulmer as it is well fitting and doesn't catch at all, and I was under the impression that they give poll pressure which my horse doesn't need/like.

I've been told I should always use them. Should I?

I've never used them as I was told they can encourage a horse to lean on the bit and I certainly don't need that!!

I'm guessing you mean the Fulmer Snaffle?
As far as I'm aware they don't give any poll pressure and the whole point of the keeper is to keep the shanks of the bits up right and level with the cheek piece.

The idea of the fulmer bit is to help guide a horse with steering, hence why you see alot of babies in them.

Its not essential to have the keepers, but without them, the bit can't do the job it was made for... help with steering.

mirror that - some seem to have slightly longer shanks where you do need the keepers to stablise it and keep it upright - but more are ok. Also having the keepers helps when you fit it as putting on the bridle you can end up with the shanks in the mouth - needless to say you know about it pretty damn quickly!!

Sorry, yes I do mean Fulmer Snaffle.

As far as poll pressure is concerned, the following is taken from the Horse Bit Shop website:

"The full cheek bits can be used with or without fulmer loops/keepers, although many would say that the keepers keep the bit in the correct place, they also add poll pressure, so if you don’t need any poll pressure then, it wouldn’t be useful to use the keepers."

They are meant to be used with fulmer bits (A fulmer is the one with loose rings outside the cheeks). They don't cause poll pressure. A full cheek bit is different as it is a fixed ring and you don't have to use loops with one. If you do then it does cause a teeny bit of poll pressure (because pressure on the reins pulls the cheekpiece forward a bit). It's barely noticeable.
A fulmer and a full cheek are different bits.

Ditto this.

With the keepers the fulmer applies light poll pressure but their main function is to assist with turning
