was merrily driving through the village this morning and although the road isn't single lane it's quite tight for 2 cars to pass each other, was doing approx 18 mph as know there could be farm tractors round corners etc, went through the main village and was approaching the first bend out of village and to my dismay a lady riding and leading 6-8 polo ponies came round the corner, the 3 on my side literally s+it themselves quite righlty as the bend was so sharp i ms

i used to do that but admittedly not on the roads - that does sound a bit daft! i've only ever lead 2 on quiet roads

sorry phone playing up! Anyway i must of appeared so quickly to the poor things and it was tight for her to get them all past. My point in posting is to ask this. Surely no one can physically control all those horses?

lol i replied before you'd finsihed - yup- perfectly capable to control 6 polo ponies like that in a field = but i'd not do it on a road!

I would have thought 2 max was safe.
My mum reported a lady to the police for leading 3 from the back of the quad down the road. It was an accident waiting to happen!
Well done for driving thinking ahead, otherwise that could have been nasty.

At the risk of getting frowned at, I used to ride one and lead 4 on the roads and 6 around the sand track. They are so well behaved and often you can thread one through anothers head collar. Although not overly safe it is the way polo ponies are excercised in the majourity of yards. I worked with polo ponies for three years and not one pony got loose from the lead string! - even at a fast canter! :)

Approaching me at a rather rapid canter at Cirencester Park a couple of years ago...

Not sure I'd fancy it on the roads though...

I ride and lead my horses around our estate but we are no where near roads, there is a polo lady up the road that rides around our estate and leads 4 at a time but again she only does it off road,i would never ride and lead more than one on a main road, one was closet to going on my bonett!

I do not know how you are in control of any more than two. If one decided to go in the other direction and another in the other what would you do? Whatever anyone says a horse is a horse and no matter how much you think you know them something could set them off. On public roads too, not all drivers are horse savvy or friendly and its an accident waiting to happen ... an avoidable accident.

Riding when you like, how you like on private property is your choice but when riding in the public domain other people and others property should be thought about and I think to endanger anyone or anything, including lead horses is very selfish.

Yes, it's a common sight in polo. I often ride and lead 4 in the summer- have led more, and all the Argentines regularly lead up to 8. It's actually not that bad (unless there's a kicker  ) as they are used to doing everything as a 'herd'.
Wouldn't do it on the roads though, I agree that is silly. Horses (as we see every day :D ) are unpredictable

Regularly see the polo yard just down the road riding one and leading 4 or 5. I don't dispute the control but it only takes one driver going a little bit too quickly around a bend and they would be strawberry jam. Actually said driver wouldn't need to be going too quickly either as road is pretty narrow and they completely fill it.

Luckily they don't tend to go far on the roads. Don't have a problem with it on the track although I did when I was on it at the same time they were, caused a few 'entertaining' moments!! I used to livery at said yard :-)
