Hi, wondering if any of you know what this might be?

About 7/8 weeks ago I noticed a lump half way down my horses neck on the left just below the line of his mane. It was soft at first but is now hard. It is not bothering him at all but shows no signs of going. At first I thought it was just a bite but it is still here a couple of months later? It is about 1 inch by 1 inch and raised about half an inch. It does not move when squished?

I am not inclined to get it looked at as it is not bothering him but it is bothering me? Any ideas please?

Is it under the skin or showing through the hair? What colour is your horse? Can you post a photo of it?

With lumps like these, if they are not bothering the horse in any way, your vet is unlikely to want to do anything with it except leave well alone. I would be inclined to monitor it carefully for any changes, especially rapid growth.

Basically it could be any number of things, not all of them sinister, so unless it does change dramatically I would have your vet look at it next time he/she is on the yard, but otherwise just keep an eye on it for the time being.

A mare I used to look after also had the same sort of lump you have described on her neck. It didn't cause her any problems and the vet said it was just a fatty lump or a cyst. It could be removed but only purely for cosmetic reasons, and it wasn't causing her any pains or problems, it was left alone.

Hope this helps, if you are still unsure get your vet to have a look at it.
