Funny noise from horses body ... what is it?

My current ride, a 5yo NF stallion, sometimes makes a strange creaky / groany noise in trot.

This is not all the time, and I don't think it's a problem. Usually it happens early in the ride when he's feeling fresh. Sounds a bit like a saddle creaking, but it's from the horse's body. Doesn't interfere with his going at all.

Does anyone know what causes it? Is it just gas?

Weird I know!! And it doesn't always happen and it doesn't happen if they need a wee or don't. No rhyme or reason as far as I have ever been able to tell!!

There are some who posit that it is the sound of food in the gut, and I'm inclined to agree. The sheath can also make noise (as can a mare's vulva - it's due to sucking in air), but that is a different sound altogether.

YEH it will be his boy bits! I hate the noise, never wanted a boy but I have one now!

someone once said to me its when it needs cleaning but im not convinced haha

Hmmm I disagree - my boy does it all the time, my mare never.

I was told it is boy bits but normally occurred when the horse was tense. Not sure how true as I've always had mares.

Being nosey, what's his registered name? NF anorack here! LOL

Pmsl using the word blowed when quoting the word willy - oops!

But stallions are such fun! My old boy - sadly missed - made lovely noises beneath (particularly when a bit excited). Of course when he was VERY excited, the next bit was a tap, tap, tap on the bottom of my boot (my legs are not that long - he was very well endowed!)

EEEEEEEK!!! Squeaky sheaths are bad enough

He's Allandale Duke, by Lovelyhill Hendrix. I liked him so much, I bought a half brother who's also a sweetie.

Duke likes to swing his about in the field and after a ride in particular, but nobody has mentioned if he does it when I'm riding :/

My boy used to slap it on his belly for fun
Mine too, reduced an entire showground to hysterics when did it at the end of a line up :rolleyes3: :redface3:

Is it a good thing when you hear the noise? I've been told it's when they're working properly?

Pie does this... We call it his 'willy trot' usually when we are having a discussion about how fast he's trotting (he wants to lean and tank and run, I want rhythm and softness).
He's a bit of a dirty old man, whops it out and slaps his tummy with it when he thinks he's getting a treat, when he thinks he's going in the field or when he's being rugged up.
I think rugging up is the worst one in some respects, a number of times in the dark evenings I've grabbed what I thought in the murky twilight was one of his surcingles only to give both of us a nasty shock!

Sniggers! That's hilarious!!

This is interesting as I was always told that only geldings did it because their bits didn't develop fully due to being gelded, so there was spare space in the sheath for the air to get trapped in.

Overall, I think the message here is that the males of any species are smutty devils who delight in making rude noises and generally being vulgar :)

The gelding i ride wasn't cut untill he was eight but he makes 'that' noise too! would/ve thought he'd be developed by that age!
