I had a dream about my old riding school last night and it got me thinking...

All the helpers got to ride once a week and the best thing we used to do was play cowboys and indians bare back in a big field which ended up with most of us falling off :D health and safty would have a fit these days

I also remember an instructor telling us that if we were balanced we should be able to ride in a saddle without the need for a girth, again alot of people hit the deck ;)

Now when your young you dont really question things SO! my question to you lot is what are your best memories of the silly, funny or stupid things you have done with your four legged friends?

That is true about the girth! But H&S would have a fit you're right!!

No funny things I'm afraid on my part, wasnt around horses as a kid!

I used to work at the RS on a Saturday and there was a couple of lanes between the stables and the indoor school - I used to ride one Haflinger and have one either side when I was about 11 lol. They used to let me in with the stallion as well. Is a shame H&S seems to have stopped all the fun. When I had my first pony me and my friend always rode up to the shops as well - we used to shout what we wanted through the door and ride back eating hot pasties.

Toook my old sec a into a really busy town inhand - he'd never even seen a car before :p

He was a perfect gentleman :D So we took him to my friends nan's back garden and he pooped on someones drive.

Then took him over a motorway bridge, didnt bat a eyelid blesh 'im :)

We used to play british bull dogs where the entire game revolved around you trying to push the other team off their horse... H&S I think not... but great fun. I don't remember anyone getting seriously hurt...

oh god, bareback, headcollar & lead rope XC pairs when i was younger. Riding barebare in a headcollar whilst leading 2 other ponies also in head collars. Double Donkey.

The list is probably endless

Barebacking my four year old down the field in just a headcollar, whilst my sister was alongside in a similar state on her pony and leading one other.

I also have memories of said sister at the riding school own a pony days, as a tiny little girl (maybe 8 max) having a hat plonked on her head and lifted up onto the back of a huge shire horse which all the day campers were supposed to be grooming as none of us could reach his back.

oh dear, I did the 'side saddle' thing too! went swimming in the river with my pony (we stank of gross river water after, urgh!!) bareback with just a headcollar etc, prob more stupid things that bangs to my head have knocked out!! My pony was a legend to put up with me tbh, she always went along with things!

Bareback and headcollar on the common, the horse took off with me jumped a cattle grid and galloped down the hill with me bobbing on his back laughing!

Bareback races across the horses fields, took the horses and ponies down to the river for a splash about - again bareback, with flip flops on! Lost one of my flip flops!

All this done at the local riding school, lol :)

I remember trying to copy the mounted police demo ad taking off my saddle whilst riding, needless to say I hit the deck loads but I did manage to do it eventually! (a fluke!)
Also when I was working in a trekking yard in Canada vaulting onto all the horses bareback, managed to get on an 18hh cart horse (again a fluke!) jumping on bareback and bridle/head collarless out in the field and trying to move my pony with my seat (not successful with a green 5 y/o!!)

I used to be able to take Hercs saddle off while still sat on him (with help to take the martingale off the girth)

Also played red light-green light with the horses out in AZ because it was too wet to go in the washes...there were 2 rules...1-have fun and 2- no slipping oter peoples bridles off. :D

We used to lie down on straw bales & jump over each other when we were kids. Utter madness. I feel sick at the thought of it now :o

We used to bring in the horses for lessons by getting on them bareback with just a halter and lead and galloping up from the field. The route went through a belt of trees and you had to do a lot of ducking and dodging of branches.

We also used to run up on each other while galloping, reach over and try to pull off the other person's bridle while going at a dead run. In hindsight, I'm surprised none of our horses ever fell but at the time, it seemed hysterically funny!

And of course, we'd all jump anything that presented itself, no matter how unsafe and half the time without saddle or helmet.

Well the usual bareback in headcollar xc/ swimming in the river etc
After seeing John Whitaker ride Gammon(I think) in saddle and just reins around his neck jump sjs thought i'd give it ago on me 13.2 and she went better than with a bridle!!
Also some of the things I have done while working in ireland are kinda crazy Midnight sj/xc (when drunk), lads slipping bridle off goin up gallops, jumping the hunter with two of us on over p2p fence in a headcollar!!
And the crazy thing is when jumping in the dark you never miss!!

Used to race along side by side with a foot in each others stirrup iron laughing so much we could not stop.
Ride and lead four bareback out to the fields and race along the verge, no hats.
Quite frequently ride to the pub and wobble home with the occasional race and fits of the giggles.
Try and ride side saddle in a gp.
Try and ride like jockeys but without the stirrups - the leathers would never go up enough.
Go out and play and have fun - it was the way to learn then, a bit of friendly competition about who would jump the biggest gorse bushes or fallen trees, It was fabulous.
Wish I was that brave now - oh well self preservation kicks in when you get older I suppose.

we would get dropped off at the ponies field (had 2 coloured super cobs) mum would bring tack up in boot of car as we kept it at home, would go out for a ride which lasted around 3 hours then would drop tack off at home and gallop all the way back to the field bareback with a headcollar and the leadrope clipped to each side of the headcollar as 'reins', jumping hedges and stone walls etc as field was a good 1hr away over the fields...sure we managed to do it quicker though the speed we went at!

hm

rode along an A road
rode through a MCDonalds drive through
galloped an ex racer (funny, silly and stupid)
jumped park benches
rode bareback and with no headcollar/bridle, just a rope round his neck
ridden slightly drunk...
vaulted on a horse by standing it at one end of the school and pegging it across from the other side
ridden one horse, led 4 in from the field

I'm sure there's more

Whe I was about 7 I got a leg up onto a pony bareback in the field. (I had no hat on either  ) My friend was holding the pony's head (no headcollar!) and said she's hold her. She lied! She let go and smacked her on the bum, so pony ran off with me shrieking with laughter. I "dismounted" after a good few laps of the field!
Wouldn't be done now (and probably quite rightly so!)

sat on my pony in the field when he wanted to come in big mistake he took off and started bucking !! i stayed on though!

I stood up in my stirrups and lent on my boys neck and he put his neck down and i rolled down his neck and landed on my bum looking up at him lol, bless him. Was so funny!! x x

This for wilsha - She was climbing on my hay once and the top hay bale was open she jumped on it and rolled all the way back down to the ground, it was hilarious, wish i had it on video would have sent it to you've been framed!!! x

I worked in racing for a few years always remember funny things when riding out a couple for you -

One girl was riding a quiet racehorse and thought it woud be funny to stand on its back when going around the indoor ride and funny enough she fell off!! Then had to explain to the trainer how she managed to fall off this 'bombproof' horse!!

Another was when a lad that was riding out thought he would try and start a mexican wave sad thing is he was a bit drunk and fell off the back and made another 3 people fall off
