One of my TBs has started to do a funny little thing in trot - it's hard to describe but looks like one stride of super extended trot, almost like he's striking out at something, he does it when I ask for the trot. But he's not striking out at anything, I just put it down to him being excited. Sometimes he does it at feeding time as well. He's totally sound otherwise and while it doesn't worry me too much, I did wonder why he's started to do it.

Has anyone ever come across this before?

Yes!
When my welsh D x comes out of canter she does an ENORMOUS step with her inside front leg, and extends it like you say.

She's always done it, but I wonder if she might do it because she's rather quick in canter so does that to keep her balance?

Yes, I've noticed he does headshake a tiny bit but it's not like normally headshaking up and down. It's more like as if a fly landed on his nose and he shakes once to the side to get it off. I've had him about a year now and never had any trouble with him before. It doesn't really affect how I ride him but I did wonder what it was all about!

My sister's horse does something like this... we call it AngryFoot cos he only does it when he can't get his own way about something. Like if she won't let him stop mid-trot for a scratch, or if she won't let him canter!

It probably is excitment if he's generally quite highly strung.

It can be a sign of lack of balance in the transition, in which case schooling will improve it.
