I have a smashing 8 month whippet boy who so far has failed to live up to any of my pre conceptions of the breed!!!! I wonder if my understanding of the breed was completely wrong or I just have a special one?!?

1) I had understood them to be fairly aloof or sometimes shy - nope. Still battling (and winning gradually) to stop him jumping all over everyone we meet. Such a friendly, happy, inquisitive dog
2) Couch potato's - nope. This dog has immense amounts of energy ... even after laps of the fields at top speed chasing around with my other dog or any other he happens across
3) Lacking in bravery - nope. If the leap from the, thankfully low, bridge in to the stream today was anything to go by!!
4) And who knew whippets liked water?!
5) High prey drive, generally shouldn't be let off lead - again nope. Took off after a deer the other day but came straight back when I whistled. Very nearly nabbed an unsuspecting squirrel the other day though! But his recall is actually excellent
6) Sensitive breed. Must say, haven't seen any if this. Honestly doesn't appear to give a rats ass if I'm stern with him!!

So all in all, not what I expected but a cracking little chap all the same - I could be a convert!

Mine is the most loving dog I've ever owned. He couldnt be less aloof! :) He also loves water, and loves to retrieve from the lake, but wont go for a wee if its raining  He has boundless energy for walks, but sleeps 20 hours a day  Hes also very brave, but very sensitive. Hes working bred and his prey drive is through the roof, but he lives with a cat and is always off lead away from the road etc.

Hes the best dog I've ever owned and I cant see me ever having another breed :)

I have owned many whippets over the years, I have a whippet, greyhound cross at the moment and I have bred a couple of litters. I have known as many extroverts as introverts. They are fun loving little dogs and much tougher than you think. Most of mine had good recall except when actually in full flight after a hare but I learnt early on to never run to keep them in sight as they would always return to their starting point.
Don't let your youngster do too much too young. Love to see a picture.

I must admit I'm having to stop myself getting another! I assumed they'd hate water - he's such a clean little dog and also won't go out to toilet in rain. I've learnt something today!

We're definitely not at the sleeping for 20 hours a day stage yet but he is still quite young I guess. Smashing dog though, and they're soooo pretty!

He sounds just fab TC - I LOVE whippets :) As others have said, pictures are mandatory though :D It is a pain with this forum that you have to upload to Photobucket or similar but we are worth it :p

As for water, the funniest thing I've ever seen was my little whippet taking off across a river chasing a moorhen.... what she didn't realise was that there was a huge dip in the river bed, she vanished completely under water :D They are brilliant little dogs :)

Thanks Chiffy, nice to hear from those experienced with the breed. Need to try and master the technology to load pics - doh!

He has so much energy, he has off lead walks now to try and keep him sane but only for max 20-30 mins at the moment still. And try to bring him back to lead if he starts going too mad! I'd assumed they were generally a fairly introvert breed - it's lovely he's such a confident little chap. Smitten with him and he's proved fairly trainable ... so far

Funnily enough he exited the stream almost as quickly as he entered it lol! Took him by surprise a bit I think!

Mine was crazy up until about 18months! Hes 3yr old now and completely mellowed. Mine is a total extrovert as well. Loves everyone and everything he meets. But he is very sensitive to peoples emotions, he cant stand any one being unhappy and knows if I'm ill or in pain or just a bit down, and hes straight there to comfort me.

He also has a VERY strong sense of right and wrong. We gathered up his toys the other day and he thought a great game was afoot, sadly they were going in the washing machine. He went mental, taking them back out of the washing machine and yapping at it once the door was shut. He then stomped off upstairs and sat with his head facing the wall and wouldnt look at anyone. You could feel the hurt and injustice radiating from him

I found him hard to train initially. Hes so smart and picks things up immediately, but quite often doesnt see why he should do things. My bitch is whippet x collie and she lives to please us. Dylan lives to please himself  Took me a while to get the 2 things to coincide!

He is the loveliest dog though, total clown but utterly charming with it. All my friends, family and neighbours are in love with him, something that he considers to be totally normal, he knows he is the best dog in all the world without anyone needing to tell him

Beau was toilet trained within a couple of weeks and is definitely clever but he has an independent streak. Like yours, he doesn't really seek approval, just expects it! My older dog is also part whippet but he's a more sensitive dog altogether, bit of a worrier. As you can see from the pics, Beau adores him so I have my suspicions his recall is only as good as it is as he takes his lead from Bruce! I haven't had him neutered yet as other 2 boys are entire but he does impose his will on Bruce a bit so will have to keep eye on that. My older cocker keeps him in check though!

They're very easy to fall for :) He gets fussed wherever he goes

Besides the water thing he sounds like Fizz! She is sleeping more though now but I can't tire her out on walks. She will paddle but not swim and is the bravest, friendliest little madam. We are having to muzzle her on walks now but because she has twice made herself VERY poorly eating things on walks rather than an aggression issue.

Yup Beau will pick up all sorts. He doesn't actually eat anything thankfully, just picks up everything he finds, carries it for a bit, then drops it. Funny dog :D The water was bit of a surprise today to be honest, first time he's done that!!

Teamchaser, he is adorable! If you don't mind me asking, what's his breeding? aside from the blaze, he's the double of my old whippet dog, who also used to tilt his head and look puzzled, and was fond of jumping off sand dunes into rivers!

And more pics, please, he's just lovely.

Oh thank you Snowfilly, he is lovely, but I am a bit biased of course ;)

He came from a lovely breeder in Malvern, raised in the home. Mum is Laguna Laura's Loren and dad is Penbriar Dusky Moon. I think one side is a coursing line, the other a show line - can't remember which way around tho?!

Laguna are a dual purpose line who course and show but predominantly are known for coursing - Dorrit McKay was still alive when I had my whippets back in the 80's ( ) and her daughter carries on the prefix now :)

Ah yes, that's what the breeder said I think. I will admit to knowing very little (nothing) about the breeding but loved the fact he came from such a lovely home.

Have been slowly trying to introduce him to the horses but he has absolutely no fear of them so that may be a recipe for disaster and best left perhaps!!

Hmmm..... I would love to say that they will mix, but my eldest greyhound (now 12) has had a smashed foot where the horse trod on her as I was getting him quite by accident :( She is the quietest gentle soul you could imagine, luckily she healed well and is sound as a pound now with no fear of horses at all x

Glad your girl had no lasting damage. Whippets/Greyhounds just look so delicate don't they?!

The one horse is fine and I honestly think wouldn't flinch if the pup was hanging from his tail, the other one, not so much! Beau is still at that age where anything new is super exciting and I don't think Lockie appreciates something whizzing around him at speed. Probably best avoided I guess

I have to admit I don't try and mix them now - my hounds would be very laid back and wouldn't give a stuff, my new TB pony would be less so! Like you rightly say, probably best avoided :)
