I recently took my horse showjumping, he jumped perfectly in the warm up but when we went into the actual show we didn't get past the first fence. We went up to the jump no different to the warm up, he went to take off but swung round to the side instead and I came off.

I was looking through photos of my horse with his old owners and noticed that they always rode him with fur on his noseband, so I was wondering what the fur does and if it would help me at shows

In theory the horse can't look down at the jump unless he lowers his head to see past the fur, keeping him more controllable. In practice you'd probably be better getting an instructor to help teach you to keep him straight and taking advice from them on artificial aids, if necessary.
