Does anyone use Cortavet for their aged horses? And if so do you use the normal Cortavet or the HA Cortavet? Does it make much more difference than normal Cortaflex?

ah ha we meet again ! My last horse was 15 and had bone spavin in one of his hocks and I used to maintain him on Cortaflex but give him Cortavet liguid (about £100 a bottle) the day before he did anything that was more strenuous, a sponsored ride or hunter trials for example. I would also give it on the day of the event and sometimes the day after. Not sure if it worked any more than the normal cortaflex but it did keep him sound and also managed to get it from the vets and my insurance company paid for it as is sooooo expensive (for the first 12 months) Hope this helps. PS also had him on apple cider vinegar which is supposed to be good for arthritis etc and is cheap as chips. Speak soon!

Ha ha ha!! I think our horses must be twins seperated at birth... mine has got spavin in his hocks too not to mention the bubblewrap sound effects he makes when he shifts from one leg to another!!

At the moment he is on... cider vinegar, cod liver oil (although it smells horrid and he only eats his food at night when there is nothing left in his haynet), MSM and Cortaflex. Am wondering whether to have a suppliment shake up and swap Cod Liver oil for Super Codlivine and whether to keep him on Cortaflex or be brave and try the Cortavet.

What difference do you reckon there is between the normal Cortavet and the HA one (apart from the price?!!).

Its a small world this forum! Not sure about the main difference between HA and Cortavet, I never went the HA route as was given Cortavet from the vet so started him on that initially whilst also having his hock medicated and then once sound, maintained him on normal cortaflex, using the cortavet when needed. Think the HA is really just a stronger version and someone advised me once that you use less of it (surely then it would be the same as trad cortaflex??) I know my friend horse who has a ligament injury (we're doomed at out yard!) is on the HA for the first month/two then going onto the traditional one. A lot of people seem to kick start on the HA and then go onto the normal one. Hope this helps! PS Had my first canter today of 100 yards - first time in four months and was soooo excited and he was so good bless him (am sure he'll get "keener" as we increase it!

I use Cortavet on my creaky old aged mare. I used to use Cortaflex but the Cortavet works out cheaper in the long run as because it is stronger it means that I can use the low maintenance dose (half a scoop) and a tub costing about £35 then lasts me four months.
