My friend and I spent a lovely couple of hours at the yard this morning and whilst doing our chores got chatting about the old days!! Who else remembers making a wisp, thatching horses, jute rugs and haynets, green canvas turnouts and the days when you didnt have to consider what time of day you dare take your horse out on the roads!! Please tell me it's not only me

Not just you - I still remember all those things and putting old duvets / blankets on under stable rugs when really cold and folding them back and securing with a roller.

I still thatch now because I dont have a proper cooler rug!

Yes i was only telling a friend of mine that is new to horse all about the jute rugs with wool blankets secured underneath. horses were always warm though.
Dont miss that much the new zealands blinking heavy when wet.
Do miss every grass verge being a canter spot

Yes I remember and I certainly don't miss wet green canvas new zealand rugs. I am now very fond of combo turnouts especially as in the days of the old nz rugs I used to have a grey who was very fond of rolling! It was amazing where she could get the mud - the area of white that was left was very small indeed. The only saving grace was that I didn't live in a red soil area so at least she wasn't permanently pink!

I still use blankets and rollers on occation!

My grandad even calls the newest most inivatiave rugs blankets, and thinks its very weird that my horse is only shod in front, all or none he reakons!

I still think that a nice jute rug with a striped witney blanket folded back looked nicer than any of the modern rugs though of course you did have to have a roller or surcingle on the horse so probably the modern rugs better from that point of view. We still thatch sometimes and still canter the show horses up some verges (provided it is short grass and you can see where you are going).

Help1 Thank you. Never been in a clique before though have to admit to not having hacked to rallies (was a spoilt child in my early years!).

Oooooh! yes - I remember all of that too - and not just hacking to rallies but hacking up to 8 miles each way ... this is starting to sound like an old Monty Python sketch now too

Du know - I can even remember HOW to make a wisp - that really is scary

Oh yes I remember well. It wasnt till this year I realised peroxide was no longer 'allowed' for treating thrush either *oops*

I used to be able to hack out after school on a 40mph limit road in complete safety. Same road now I wouldnt even entertain it and had red string girth! good times

I used to love jumping the drainage ditches!!!!!

Classic things always come back into fashion so don't throw stuff out. My Black bridle with white padding on nose and browbands came back into fashion. I bet those plaited red reins and red string girths will too given time!

I also fondly remember galloping round stubble fields jumping the little bales and it being acceptable to gallop and jump horse with no boots and no back protector (on me). I did always wear a hat though.

I remember all those too - jutes are brilliant, did you used to put yours on inside out if your horse was sweating?

We always wore hats too but obviously with the chin strap up over the peak - it was so uncool not too
